Purpose/Summary: The Instructor is responsible for providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment in their training field.  Every instructor plays an important dual role as a member of the instructional staff and as an advisor to students.  Instructors are responsible for maintaining professional competence, for keeping personal knowledge current, for participating in departmental and campus-wide activities, for developing a positive and active learning environment in the classroom for students, and for delivering and assessing established program competencies and outcomes.  To accomplish this goal, all instructors utilize their talents, skills, and abilities in a coordinated and consistent team effort under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Education, Program Director, or his/her designee.

 

            Qualifications:

Ø  Instructors are expected to have appropriate academic and experiential qualifications.  Courses taught generally require the minimum of a baccalaureate degree in the field of instruction and a minimum of two years of industry experience in the field of instruction.  Courses in some non-degreed areas generally do not require a baccalaureate degree, but the instructor must possess specialized training, industry experience, or a documented special competency.  Master’s degrees are required at some locations to teach general education subjects and some specialized subjects.  In support of qualifications presented, Instructor applicants must provide official transcripts of all postsecondary colleges attended and evidence of certifications earned to the Director of Education.  All instructor applicants will demonstrate their teaching skills prior to hiring.

Ø  Instructors teaching in programs that have developed industry certifications must possess the certification associated with the program or demonstrate a knowledge equivalent to the certification.  In some areas certification is required.

Ø  Knowledge and understanding of the professional career paths and demands of the field of instruction.

Ø  Motivation, dedication, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm for teaching.

Ø  Sensitivity to the needs and requirements of adult learners.

Ø  Attend new faculty orientation prior to the first term of employment.

Ø  Ability and desire to embrace the school’s mission.

Ø  Ability to inspire students to the highest level of achievement in preparation for meeting employer expectations.

 

Duty 1: Institutional Duties - Responsibility:

a.    To the school

1)    Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of all school policies, and adhere to and uphold their implementation and enforcement.

2)    Meet faithfully all assigned classes.

3)    Assist in maintaining a safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

4)    Safeguard materials, records, and equipment.

5)    Participate in campus-wide initiatives in support of recruitment, retention, graduation, and other institutional effectiveness goals on an individual and team basis.

6)    Attend school functions including staff meetings, in-service training, faculty meetings, orientation, graduation, and special student activities and school events as required.  Serve on standing committees as appointed.

7)    Ensure a commitment to interdepartmental cooperation.

8)    Provide advance notification regarding lateness, absence, and vacation schedules.  When voluntary termination occurs, instructors are requested to complete the term in which they are teaching whenever possible or, at minimum, to provide two weeks notice.

9)    Accept additional related duties as assigned by the Director of Education or his/her designee.

 

b.     Administrative

1)    Maintain and post office hours for the purpose of student advisement and tutoring.  The schedule should include Friday hours as assigned for full-time faculty members.

2)    Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of student progress, performance, and attendance as required by school policy and procedure.

3)    Maintain appropriate confidentiality when working with students, records, and administrative staff.

4)    Contact via telephone absent students on a daily basis.

5)    Submit mid-term and final student grades per school policy.

6)    Maintain flexibility in fulfilling the instructional needs of the school.

 

c.    Curriculum Instruction

1)    Participate in the curriculum development and monitoring process.

2)    Make recommendations for additions to, or upgrading of, curriculum, course materials, equipment, and textbooks.

3)    Recommend library/resource center acquisitions; assist the Librarian in culling the library collection.

4)    Share course materials and insights with other faculty members.

5)    Participate in Advisory Board meetings.

6)    Keep up-to-date and in contact with local employers regarding appropriateness of course/program content.

 

d.     Professionalism

1)    Remain current with developments within the area of instructional responsibility through memberships in professional organizations, seminars, workshops, and continuing education courses.

2)    Maintain professional dress and demeanor.

3)    Maintain at a minimum the required work schedule.

4)    Maintain appropriate confidentiality when working with students, records, and administrative staff.

5)    Maintain an attitude of enthusiasm, willingness to cooperate, and work well with others.  Interact with students and fellow employees in a courteous, professional, and positive manner.

6)    Treat students with fairness, impartiality, and objectivity.

7)    Regularly participate in professional development activities and provide documentation of these activities.

8)    Participate in scheduled quarterly in-service and training activities.

9)    Complete an annual self-evaluation and participate in the performance appraisal process.

10) Abide by all Federal, state, and accreditation/compliance rules and regulations.

11) Adhere to the Employee Handbook, Faculty Guide, Catalog, and other school policy and procedure and any amendments thereto.

 

a.    Classroom/Laboratory Management

1)    Provide students with a full understanding of course objectives (syllabus, course outlines, and course materials/equipment) on the first day of class.

2)    Maintain appropriate classroom control while utilizing a variety of teaching methods and strategies to meet the needs of varying student learning styles.

3)    Maintain records of course preparation (lesson plans, etc.) and evaluation tools (examinations, quizzes, project/portfolio assignments, etc.), and submit as required.

4)    Maintain class in session for scheduled hours, and facilitate effective use of class time.

5)    Ensure that all course materials and objectives are presented to accomplish the objectives on the official curriculum syllabus.

6)    Maintain consistent performance when dealing with all students with respect to grading, documentation, policies, and discipline.

7)    Be aware of class and individual student attendance status and academic progress on a daily basis.

8)    Provide the Director of Education or his or her designee with regular feedback relative to class and student progress and/or problems and concerns.

9)    Provide the student with timely information on his or her academic progress relative to quizzes, exams, homework, and projects; review progress with students on a regular basis, well in advance of the end of a term.

10) Ensure that final grades are turned in on time.  Submit a mid-term report of students whose grade point averages are below a “C” at the conclusion of the sixth week of classes.

11) Ensure the classroom/laboratory facility is left in a clean and orderly manner upon conclusion of your scheduled session.

12) Actively enforce school policies, such as on-line/computer usage, dress code, etc. at all times.

13) Maintain overall student attendance and retention rates in accordance with the fiscal year’s attrition goals.

 

b.    Instructional Delivery Presentation

1)     Present enthusiastic, well-prepared, organized, and clear lectures and classroom activities consistent with the course syllabus and outline.

2)     Utilize active learning techniques to maintain a challenging learning environment for students; ensure a variety of media/audio-visual/technology materials to accentuate your presentations, to achieve course goals and objectives, and to facilitate the variety of student learning styles.

3)     Provide students with class/laboratory objectives daily.

4)     Ensure course materials are accurate and contemporary in accordance with established syllabi and course objectives; ensure material presented includes all of the course performance objectives.

5)     Create and administer quiz and examination questions that are based upon performance objectives identified in the syllabus and their expected outcomes.

6)     Assist with exemption/challenge exams for specific courses in teaching field.

7)     Facilitate the efficient use of assigned class time.

8)     Provide the opportunity for individual tutoring and remediation.

9)     Provide additional lectures and review as necessary.

10)  Utilize effective delivery skills (e.g., eye contact, voice intonation, and various questioning techniques).

11)  Draw on personal experiences to relate the material you are presenting to the contemporary workplace.

12)  Utilize additional community resources in instruction (i.e., field trips, presentations by guest speakers) relevant to course objectives.

13)  Utilize library resources in classroom activities.

14)  Ensure appropriate development of student portfolio pieces.

15)  Continually promote the development and effective use of higher cognitive level/critical thinking skills in students.

16)  Present “self” as a professional role model.

17)  Inspire student confidence in school, faculty, and self.

18)  Maintain a minimum overall customer satisfaction rating on the student satisfaction survey instrument in accordance with campus goals.

19)  Maintain a minimum rating of “meets requirements” on classroom observation results.

 

c.    Laboratory/Clinic/Practicum Activities

1)     Assign laboratory activities that coincide with the material presented in lecture sessions.

2)     Preside over all scheduled laboratory activities and hours.

3)     Ensure that time is spent productively by students working on appropriate assignments.

4)     Provide the opportunity for individual student attention.

5)     Evaluate students and provide them specific feedback.

6)     Provide additional assignments/projects as student progress dictates.

7)     Order supplies as needed by following school procedure.

8)     Assist in maintaining a clean lab and clean equipment.

9)     Conduct initial troubleshooting measures on equipment and promptly label and report all equipment in need of repair.

10)  Provide adequate safety measures for students and security measures to ensure safety of laboratory equipment.
