The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a seasoned System Administrator to join its Technology Department.  The Chronicle of Higher Education is building a formidable technology team in order to go far beyond its current digital content and services. The Chronicle was the world’s first publication to use computer-based authoring, typesetting, and publishing and was also the first newspaper on the Web. What will be the next big thing The Chronicle does first in media? We know; and we are looking for superior talent to get us there.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter that does whatever is necessary to insure the reliability and scalability of The Chronicle’s web platforms.  They will help the Technology team by insuring the Development, Quality Assurance and Production system’s software and hardware are kept up-to-date and are performing at peak levels at all times.   

The technology department is an agile/scrum team and this position will insure high availability in response to the team’s request.

Responsibilities include:

Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.

Install and configuration of Web infrastructure components (e.g. Web Servers and Web Server Plug-ins)
Assist in installation of third party integration products (e.g. portal connector, file servers, etc.)

 

Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.  Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.

 

Maintain code repositories and perform routine production deployments using SVN or CVN as well as keeping the Dev and QA environments (code, DB, etc ) in-sync with production.

 

Maintain Disaster Recovery(DR) procedures and participate in DR testing

 

Requirements:

Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in System Administration

 

2+ years of Tomcat, Apache, LAMP, and VM installation and configuration experience. 

 

Advanced database administration skills including backups/restores, monitoring DB performance, running SQL scripts to monitor the system and modify tables when required. 

 

Excellent skills in communication, analysis, research, and problem solving

 

Ability to work evenings and weekends, when necessary.

Desired Skills:

Window server and application knowledge
VM setup and configuration
Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5 and CentOS) experience
Knowledge of Oracle or MySQL database backup and maintenance procedures
