Position Summary
The Technical Architect is responsible for:
• Understanding, advocating and augmenting the principles of the Information Technology (IT) strategy.
• Assisting with the design and development of the governance activities associated with ensuring compliance with the Enterprise Technical Architecture.
• Analyzing the current technology environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
• Analyzing technology industry and market trends, and determining their potential impact on the enterprise.
• Overseeing or consulting on technical architecture implementation and modification activities, particularly for new and/or shared infrastructure solutions.
• Overseeing and facilitating the evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology and product standards, as well as the design of standard configurations.
• Consulting on application or infrastructure development projects to fit systems or infrastructure to the technical architecture, and identify when it is necessary to modify the technical architecture to accommodate project needs.
• Documenting necessary technical architecture design and analysis work, including project postmortem documentation and metric collection.

The Location:
This position can be based in Somerset, Kansas City, St. Petersburg or Swindon.

Key Responsibilities
The Technical Architect will be responsible for the following:
• Working with the Enterprise Architecture team to execute the IT strategy, and proactively communicating and promoting activities associated with its implementation.
• Leading initiatives to standardize processes for building technical solutions, including infrastructure, databases and business applications.
• Participating in Architecture Review Board (ARB) activities to enforce compliance with all documented IT standards, including the review and approval of requests for non-compliance and requests for new standards.
• Creating and maintaining technical architecture artifacts, including guidelines, reference architectures, models, policies, standards and procedures.
• Providing technical guidance and expertise to project teams, advising them on architectural decisions concerning hardware and software platforms, supporting technologies, and best practices.
• Architecting, designing and implementing sound technical architectures that meet requirements for scalability, reliability, availability and supportability.
• Assessing system requirements and providing accurate cost estimates and timelines for completion.
• Engaging and collaborating with outsourcing partners to develop detailed plans for implementing approved projects and change activities; and proactively managing and driving these activities to timely completion.
• Leading efforts to deliver on strategic initiatives, including server virtualization, database consolidation, systems monitoring, and identity management.
• Complying with all applicable change management policies and procedures, including opening change controls in a timely fashion, providing detailed and accurate information on the changes to be performed and the approvals required, and completing all documentation necessary for closing them.
• Working with IT teams on a regular basis to review and assess operational performance metrics, and propose change projects as needed.
• Troubleshooting complex computer system problems and providing recommendations for addressing identified issues.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.

Experience:
• Seven to 10 years of experience in IT, including technical architecture, network design, application development, middleware, servers and storage, and database management, with extensive participation in project and operational activities.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in the Life Sciences industry, with direct exposure to regulatory requirements and Computer System Validation.
• Extensive working experience with multiple, diverse technical configurations, technologies and processing environments, including popular operating systems (Windows, Unix, Linux), relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server), hardware and software vendors and solutions (HP, Dell, Microsoft, Oracle, Symantec, VMWare, Citrix, etc.)
• Extensive experience working with Microsoft technologies, including Windows operating systems, Exchange Server, SQL Server, and infrastructure components such as Active Directory, DNS, WINS, etc.
• Extensive working experience with virtualization technologies (server, desktop, application) and a solid understanding of their pros and cons.
• Experience in designing and developing business applications a plus, particularly using .NET, Java and XML technologies, database programming, and service-oriented architecture.
Knowledge/Skills:
• Extensive practical knowledge of Microsoft technologies and solutions.
• Extensive practical knowledge of VMWare, Citrix and related technologies.
• Strong practical knowledge of Symantec/Altiris product suites, including anti-virus, deployment, monitoring and reporting, etc.
• Strong knowledge of hardware, software and network concepts and solutions.
• Solid understanding of architectural principles and best practices for reliability, availability, scalability, etc.
• Ability to quickly comprehend the functions and capabilities of new technologies, and visualize the potential applicability and benefit to the organization.
• Ability to develop accurate and detailed plans for execution, and manage resources, budget and schedule through completion.

Work Environment:
• Individual’s primary workstation is located in the office area, where the noise level is low. Employee may be present on the manufacturing floor where the noise level is low to moderate.
