TOOL ROOM MANAGER Birmingham

Manage a Progression Press Toolroom and CAD department of approximately 15 people

My Client is a unique privately-owned sixth-generation family business that has been established in Birmingham for 150 years in 2012, located just a few minutes from the City Centre. The Company is a successful bespoke, niche engineering business with an international reputation for technical capability and customer service and has significant potential for future growth.
Specialising in the design and manufacture of high volume precision progression press tools and components, the Company supplies parts and expertise services to customers from a diverse range of sectors, including telecommunications, plumbing, IT, automotive, white goods, environmental, aerospace, medical and healthcare. Over 70% of production is for export and current annual turnover is around £9m from 52 employees, with existing targets of £10 -£12m through to 2011/2012.

Job Description:
o Manage a Toolroom and CAD department of approximately 15 people
o Development of a multi-skilled team, which provides the operation with a flexible and motivated workforce
o Ensure that health, safety and environmental issues and improvements within the department are made to maintain a safe and pleasant working environment
o Ensure that the quality systems and operating procedures are clearly defined and followed
o Ensure that all visual information and standards are maintained within the department.
o Help define the main (KPIs) to ensure achievement of productivity targets
o Ensure resources are manned appropriately during each shift
o Re-deploy labour in the event of absence, machine breakdown and shortage of work.
o Carry out effective communication relating to organisation and operational information.
o Ensure good housekeeping and safety working practices are adhered to using 5S.
o Carry out reporting and paperwork as required e.g. Quality concerns, T-card system, daily audits etc.
o Daily operational meetings and provide detailed production target information.
o Assist the project team to ensure that any new projects/products are successfully launched
o Supervise an effective working relationship with tool room suppliers and subcontractors
o Ensure that all personnel within the department are trained and developed in line with the needs of the business.
o Ensure positive morale through employee involvement and communication.
o Carry out annual appraisals. Define and monitor objectives for personnel within the department.
o Conduct disciplinary and grievance hearings as necessary.
o Develop full multi-skilling within the team.
o Leading the drive for Change Management and Lean Techniques through all areas of the business
o Achieving set targets for New Tooling business
o The maintenance and improvement of Technical documentation and processes;
o Champion of training, mentoring and development for departmental employees, continually raising skill standards;
o The delivery of world class tools to provide quality products to customer requirements, within budget and time constraints.

Candidate Requirements:
o Ideally qualified to degree level or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
o Ability to perform under pressure
o Experience of complex, precision, carbide progression tools and associated components
o Decisive leadership skills with demonstrable technical experience
o Lean manufacturing and Continuous improvement experience
o Ability to effectively communicate at any level an astute influencer and negotiator.
o A team player with astute mentoring skills.
o Customer and commercial awareness.
o Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to identify appropriate methods
o Budgetary and purchasing experience.
Preferred:
o Member of appropriate professional body
o Knowledge of relevant presses and equipment
o Management team experience.
o Appropriate 3D CAD CAM experience

Willingness to travel occasionally
