Purpose:

 

The Training Manager (TM) is expected to operate in the Member Education and Training Center (METC) as part of its Personal Assistant Training Program.  The TM will work closely with Personal Assistant Instructors (PAI), METC and union officers, staff, and leaders to communicate with union members about union training programs and current issues.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The TM’s primary responsibility is to supervise instructors and oversee the accurate application of lesson plans according to adult learning and popular education principles.  In addition, the TM may perform one or a combination of the duties and responsibilities listed below:

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.         Set a professional, competent, efficient tone for the  program

2.         Model and maintain a positive atmosphere of respect and confidentiality

3.         Coordinate and revise class schedules

4.         Be prepared to teach at least one class a week and actively participate in demonstrations and evaluations.  Utilize Adult Learning principles and techniques.

5.         Evaluate the progress and job-readiness of Personal Assistant Instructors (PAI) in conjunction with other training staff. 

6.         Meet with PAI’s individually about issues that arise in the classroom and to discuss their progress in the class or workshop.

7.         Work closely with the Executive Director to evaluate and make staff development and termination decisions. Participate in the development of curriculum for the training program and update/revise current materials and lessons utilizing the mandated curriculum and other resources.

8.         Assist with training new instructors on topics and techniques, as needed.

9.         Participate through review meetings and informal processes in order to communicate classroom information to other instructors.

10.       Participate in discussions on future program development.

11.       Participate in staff development meetings and attend outside training/conferences to continually update adult-learner teaching skills and materials.  Demonstrate continuous learning through application of current popular education techniques, use of current content, mastery of adult learning techniques, and revising/changing current teaching methods as information is available.

12.       Keep the Executive Director informed of concerns, problems, changes, etc. which arise in relation to the program and individual classes.

13.       Participate in staff meetings, interdepartmental meetings, student conferences, and instructor-review meetings.

14.       Other duties as requested by the Executive Director

 

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

 

The TM’s primary responsibility is the supervision of PAIs. The TM must be able to act and organize his/her time independently.  S/he must also be able to receive direction from and interact with the METC Director, as well as other union officers, staff, and leaders when it becomes necessary in the daily operation of the METC.

 

Minimum Qualifications

1.         Management experience desired.

2.         Three to five years  education/training experience preferably with health care professionals/workers  in an adult/popular education environment

3.         BA desired

4.         Bilingual Spanish highly desirable

5.         Demonstrated record of  professional competence through formal education, attendance at seminars, workshops, etc., professional involvement and readings

6.         Microsoft Office skills

 

Criteria for Evaluation:

 

The TM will be evaluated on his/her ability and skills in training, assisting and developing the capacity of instructors and workers.  The TM will embrace the mission of SEIU HCII and the METC and demonstrate our organization’s values on a daily basis.  Among other criteria, s/he will be evaluated on ability to communicate effectively with staff, administration, and others, and his/her contribution to a positive, productive work climate that facilitates good team development and coordination.  Must be able to work independently, maintain working relations with the members and other staff, balance conflicting demands successfully, and carry out assigned tasks in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the METC’s overall goals and expectations. On a regular basis, the TM will participate in formal feedback and evaluation.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Must be able to work evening and weekend hours.

All staff are expected to respect the processes of the organization and are expected to work within the framework of the organization to resolve internal disputes and issues.
