TSM Storage Engineer
The primary role of the Storage Engineer is to provide technical leadership within an enterprise TSM backup environment and be able to troubleshoot daily TSM issues that arise.
The opportunity
Position is also responsible for directly providing input to the strategic direction of the enterprise backup environment. This includes having excellent working knowledge of TSM backup software in an enterprise environment and the ability to define/identify business requirements. The Storage engineer will provide hands on experience in architecting optimal, stable, flexible solutions aligned with Swiss Re's business initiatives and IT strategy. This requires a solid understanding of TSM backup software, disk / tape solutions, and data backup technologies; including de-duplication and virtualization, clustering, data replication. The Storage Engineer will focus on the operation of existing environment, determining current and future enterprise backup needs, and be able to provide concepts and best practices related to backup technologies in order to accommodate business and technology challenges. A good understanding Tier 1 storage arrays is also preferred.
About you
- Excellent working knowledge and troubleshooting techniques in an enterprise TSM environment.
- Oversee and facilitate the operation of an enterprise TSM installation.
- Analyze the current technology environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
- Design and implementation of an Enterprise Backup Architecture based on business requirements and IT strategies, as well as to identify gaps and pain points within the current environment.
- Facilitate the evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology and product standards, as well as the design of standard configurations.
- Document necessary technical architecture design and analysis work, possibly including project post-mortem documentation and metric collection.
- Drives the adoption of new technologies and development methods
- Manage the development of transition plans for moving from the current to the future state environment across application portfolios
- Review vendor deliverables (design, requirements, charters, etc.) to ensure they meet specifications and standards
- Experience establishing and documenting standards, guidelines, and best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with strong ability to influence both IT and business partners
- Ability to prioritize and manage work to critical project timelines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work in a global team environment; speak fluently in English. Ability to also speak Swiss-German is preferred, but not required.
Technical Skills and required experience:
- BS and/or MS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or similar educational path.
- 5+ Years of enterprise TSM Information Technology experience
- 5+ years of Data Backup Engineering experience.
- Experience using TSM 6.x backup software, IBM 3590 tape library management, tape encryption, policy and disk pool management, ability to interpret reports and system alerts.
- Experience and knowledge using Brocade Director Class Switches; Data Center Fabric Manager, ISL configuration, fibre channel characteristics, zone creations - both simple and complex.
