Undercurrent News – Software developer

Job Description

We are looking for a part-time, possibly extended to full-time, PHP (and HTML/JS/CSS) full stack developer to work on a fast-growing startup.

Where? We are based in London, but this is a remote working position. Might involve fortnightly meetings/ visits to keep track of projects.

When? Part-time or full-time, we’re flexible. Instead of interviews with brainteasers and coding, we intend to offer a small development contract before deciding to hire. The role is available for immediate start.

THE ROLE

The role involves supporting the existing codebase, as well as developing a range of back-end and front-end projects.

The projects and tasks will range from simple WordPress extensions, code refactoring and optimising to bigger projects such as creating a Crunchbase-style database, integrating our invoicing, registration and payment systems into a single CRM solution, developing data visualisations, and much more.

Links to example projects and/or open source project contributions will be welcome, and carry weight in the selection process.

Possible equity rewards, flexible working hours, ability to work from home, responsibility on future direction of projects, and ability to work on a greenfield implementation on new projects, are perks of the job.

Skills Requirements

Someone who:

- Has experience with WordPress and PHP
- Is comfortable with HTML5, CSS and Javascript, understands web architecture well
- Has good knowledge of modern web development libraries (e.g. D3, AngularJS, jQuery)
- Is comfortable with using Git
- Has good understanding of web security and counter-measures to common attacks
- Has server administration skills (optional)

IDEAL CANDIDATE

- Produces clean and documented code and is up to date on latest technologies/software

- Can work on a codebase with others and learn new technologies as needed

- Has understanding of large email newsletter campaigns

- Is conscientious and able to communicate on their work

- Is interested in A/B testing and other similar techniques

About Undercurrent News

THE COMPANY

Undercurrent News was founded in October last year in London by two of the leading business reporters covering the global seafood business. We enabled paid subscriptions in May and already have more than 700 paying subscribers, rising daily.

We kicked off by bootstrapping the site on WordPress, adding a free-tier payment system and a commodity price visualization section using existing libraries and software systems such as Braintree, S2Member and D3.

Our focus on unrivalled news coverage and clean and user-friendly technology has allowed us to challenge large incumbents and we have been profitable and growing every month since launch.

Our next aim is to make our site able to grow with our business, while putting  into fruition our many ideas for it, and this is where this role comes in.
