This Underwriter, Commercial Lines is for the Gainesville, FL office (SERO).  The position can be filled at a higher level depending on the skills and qualifications of the selected candidate.

JOB SUMMARY:
Accepts, retains and prices all major lines of commercial insurance risks in conformance with established underwriting policies, practices and standards. Responsible for terriorty assignment which generally consists of smaller Commercial Agencies. Works within specific limits and authority on commercial underwriting assignments of moderate technical complexity. Major lines include: General Liability; Commercial Fire, Boiler, and Machinery and Package; Commercial Auto Garage; Crime/Fidelity and Surety, Inland Marine and Umbrella.

RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties cover what are generally believed to be principal and essential functions of the job. Specific circumstances may allow or require some people assigned to the job to perform a somewhat different combination of duties.

1. Accepts, retains and prices commercial risks for all lines of business in accordance with established underwriting policies, practices and standards.
2. Determines applicable policy contracts and forms. Interprets and analyzes more complex or unusual coverage forms.
3. Responsible for profitability and growth through: a. properly classifying and pricing a risk. b. managing loss frequency and that portion of loss severity that can be controlled. c. risk acceptance and renewal retention. d. developing, implementing and monitoring action plans as appropriate. e. accountability for the quality of assigned portfolio.
4. Builds strong Agency relationships that encourage profitable new production and retention of existing accounts and works with Sales Manager(s) to identify/resolve opportunities and challenges within assigned Agencies. May make agency visits to develop relationships and address sales objectives/opportunities.
5. Provides specialized underwriting and underwriting training in all major lines. Conducts training for new underwriters as assigned. Provides quality control checks in conjunction with these training programs.
6. May participates in training for claims and sales personnel through sales meetings, field visitations or other field functions.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelors degree in business administration, insurance or related field preferred.

Experience: Minimum of one year commercial underwriting experience.

Knowledge: Commercial underwriting policy, practices and procedures. Rating plans and plan concepts. State and federal insurance laws and regulations. Filing and countersignature requirements, cancellations and other requirements. Commercial insurance processing systems. Some positions may require knowledge of Fidelity and Surety products.

Skills/Competencies:
"Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems. Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability. Ability to operate PC and related software. Ability to advise agents and agency staff on commercial contracts, procedures, and business practices. Regularly and consistently demonstrates the Nationwide Values and Guiding Behaivors.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal office environment. Occasional travel. Extended and/or non standard work hours as required.
