Underwriting Director - Commercial Small Business Portfolio Strategy Analyst

Job Summary
 
This role is critical to driving the Small Business strategy. The role is accountable for providing underwriting direction and oversight that enables the execution of the small business underwriting strategy. Accountable for business results through detailed analytics of the Small Business portfolio, focus on results, driving overall profitability, and ensuring execution of business strategy. This role indirectly and directly impacts the overall business success.
 
Essential Duties Responsibilities
 

  1. Performs sophisticated analysis of all lines of the Small Business portfolio. Identifies the profitable areas as well as those needing improvements. Clearly articulates purpose for instituting actions and controls to improve the business
  2. Is responsible for working with Finance, Actuarial, Claim, Risk Control and underwriting leaders analyzing business metrics and trends. Effectively and consistently collaborates with corporate line of business and customer segment leaders
  3. Reviews underwriting guidelines and makes changes to guidelines based upon strategic business initiatives including pricing direction as well as develop, implement and monitor overall business
  4. Recommend underwriting and pricing improvements to leadership based upon overall analysis such as review of loss drivers (perils/causes of loss). Exploits findings to position business portfolio that improves Small Business loss ratio and achieve/exceed targeted goals – New Business, Renewals and overall impacts on Combined Ratio
  5. Develop and provide training to underwriters when needed on various rollouts developed
  6. Assist in managing Small Business CAT strategies by working with underwriting leadership and support functions to determine action plans and focus
  7. Work closely with Marketing Directors, underwriting team, Program team, FSSs and Agency Automation when it comes to Program and Book Roll opportunities by providing support as needed in identifying and executing business plans
  8. Works with Actuarial and Management Team to manage monthly pricing direction

Skills, Knowledge Abilities

  1. Strong underwriting analysis skills that includes technical and business acumen, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures
  2. Has worked in a underwriting home office managing projects and detailed assignments
  3. Excellent communications, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA’s internal and external business partners
  4. Brings ideas and creative innovative thinking to the table. Is a problem solver resolving unique and challenging business issues
  5. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software

 
 
Education Experience
 

  1. Bachelors degree and  Professional designations such as CPCU preferred
  2. Minimum of 10 years commercial PC underwriting experience having worked on major projects and assignments to drive business results
