UNIX SYSTEMS ENGINEER

Founded in 1841, Fordham enrolls more than 15,100 undergraduate and graduate students in its 10 Colleges and Schools.Our IT/Computer Services Group is currently seeking a Unix Systems Engineer to be responsible for the continued maintenance, monitoring and deployment of new centralized systems services.
This Systems Engineer position will include the following duties:
- Tend to software upgrades, physical support of the hardware, hardware lifecycle management, security and the general care, upkeep and deployment of integrated systems.
- Ability to implement knowledge of Solaris and Linux server operating systems, as it relates to authentication, authorization, system security, and layered products.
- Ability to coordinate and implement key infrastructure technologies such as, Storage (SAN, NAS), Firewalls, Antivirus, system management tools, databases, web services, server virtualization, and integration tools.
- Assist in supporting, maintaining and improving existing systems documentation, policies and procedures and highlight any inconsistencies and update documentation accordingly.
- Assist in the scheduling and implementation of upgrades, modifications and installations to systems.
- Assist in training and maintaining core support services within Computer Services, developing new skills as required.
- Assist in developing and maintaining good computing practices for the University consistent with the mission statement, operational needs, and established procedures.
- Install and manage security and application layer products and report security infractions within the environment to management.
- Assist in the development and deployment of any applications necessary for the Computer Services staff to complete the day-to-day management of enterprise systems and applications as requested by the University community.
- Act as on-call engineer for all centralized server resources during extended coverage periods on a rotating basis.
- Effectively collaborate and give technical support to Forham IT staff, including, but not limited to: SSIA (applications support), Computer Services, User Support, Network Services, and ITAC (Academic Computing)
- Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery activities.
- Provide for university staff consultations and technical assistance.
Qualified candidates must have a BS degree, Unix knowledge, with 1-3 years of Systems Engineering experience. Knowledge in Linux (Redhat) and Unix (Solaris) Operating Systems (or similar Unix/Linux equivalent knowledge), and related security is preferred. Proficiency in the following skill sets is a plus: storage area networks/network attached storage, firewalls, and server virtualization (e.g. Sun Containers, VMWare). Good communication skills are required.
