The Veterinary Technician will serve on a team that supports and assists CCM veterinarians in the care of animals in MGH research facilities. The veterinary technician will respond to healthcare-related questions from the research animal specialists (RASs), serve as a second-level responder to routine animal health concerns which cannot be managed by the RAS staff and serve as a primary responder to veterinary-related issues associated with advanced medical and surgical procedures.

Responsibilities include:
• Perform clinical rounds and ensures that prescribed clinical care is conducted for the research animals as necessary and delegated by the clinical veterinarians;
• Provide instruction to researchers, RAS staff and interns to assure that animals are treated humanely and adequately;
• Provide instruction to RAS staff and interns in the animal quarantine and health surveillance programs accordance with established MGH policies.;
• Provide anesthesia for advanced level procedures and/or assist in surgical manipulations.
• Oversee multi-level post-operative care program for all animals recovering from surgery.escribed by Critical Care Services Manager or Clinical Veterinary staff in compliance
• Perform specific diagnostic procedures including highly technical sample collection (i.e. catheterization), radiographs, and necropsy procedures as necessary.
• Maintain inventory management system/material replenishment system for all veterinary medications and supplies.

Working environment:
The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions and hazards. Specifically, employees may be exposed to noise, dust, chemicals, radioactive isotopes, extreme heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure to any of the above is dependent on the assigned duties. Some aspects of this position may expose the incumbent to potentially fatal zoonotic diseases. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment may be required and will be provided when required, accompanied by appropriate training.

• Associate degree in veterinary science or other related field.
• A minimum of three years of veterinary care experience post degree; experience with a variety of species is preferred
• Veterinary technician certification (CVT) or LAT certification required.

Requirements include:
• Proficient in routine veterinary practices and diagnostic procedures.
• Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in mathematics pertinent to the duties of the position.
• Computer experience in software such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Powerpoint required.
• Ability to lift and move 50 lbs on a regular basis.
• Long periods of standing.
• Capable of working in a team-oriented environment.

• Ability to make decisions regarding veterinary clinical care and to address veterinary emergency situations that arise within the animal research facilities.
• Has a customer-focused attitude.
