Prudential Fixed Income (PFI) is one of the largest fixed income managers in the US with over $327 billion in assets under management for institutional, retail, and affiliated insurance company clients worldwide. PIM-Fixed Income and its predecessor business units have managed US fixed income accounts for institutional clients since 1928.
The Institutional Account Manager is the central point of contact for the firm's institutional clients. It requires someone with the ability to understand all aspects of the client's accounts, including but not limited to legal, operational, compliance, and general investment product related issues. This role is part of a team of Client Service Associates. As a central point of contact, the Institutional Account Manager will be responsible to resolve or oversee the resolution of any inquiries from clients and respective client consultants. The focus of the position are large Institutional clients.
Face to Face Client Interaction-The Account Manager will be responsible for positioning and communicating the capabilities of the Fixed Income organization to clients. Incumbent will also provide client and market color for the Firm's product development efforts. The individual will work closely with the portfolio management and research teams. Incumbent will also be required to provide clients via video or teleconference updates on a monthly or quarterly basis. These updates will include investment strategy, risk profile, performance, and other critical components of the fixed income investment process. The Account Manager will be expected to cover these topics independently without Portfolio Management resources.
The Account Manager will also be expected to attend the face to face client portfolio reviews which typically happen bi-annually. The face to face meetings for the smaller accounts will be covered by the Account Manager exclusively. Meetings with larger, more sophisticated accounts incumbent would attend with the Portfolio Manager.
The individual shall also assist the sales team in cross sell efforts. The Account Manager shall be supported by the Analysts on the Account Management team with respect to ongoing reporting or administrative day to day tasks.
Portfolio Manager Support- The Account Manager sits on the trading desk and while in the office will deal with Portfolio Managers daily. The Account Manager shall attempt to minimize the PM's role in Client Service to the extent possible and shall ensure that there is no PM involvement with clients whose revenue stream and growth opportunity do not support that resource. It will be critical for the Account Manager to keep up to date on the investment strategies, thus a strong relationship with the Portfolio Managers is a requirement of the position.
The Account manager is required to attend all Investment Team meetings to ensure they are current on the key investment strategies. The Account Manager will also be a product resource for more junior members of the team.
Team Building- The Account Manager is part of the Client Service team and while incumbent will not have direct staff, incumbent will have matrix responsibility over other associates on the team. Here incumbent is expected to give direction as appropriate and mentor. The Account Manager is also expected to have good relationships with all key areas in the Firm.
The Account Manager will report to the Head of Account Management, and may backup or act as his proxy on client or business related matters.
Specific Activities
- Proactively manage and develop relationships with clients, as well as internal areas of the company that will allow you to effectively complete your job
- Act as the central point of contact for all client issues and act as the liaison with internal areas (portfolio management, operations, marketing, etc.) to get the issue resolved. Delegate tasks as appropriate.
- Attain a deeper understanding of the needs and requirements of current Clients which will allow you to proactively shape and define the required service proposition for each key strategic client
- Follow Compliance procedures for all client entertainment
- Assisting other members of the Client Service team in new account take-on process. This includes but is not limited to developing the investment guidelines for new portfolios.
- Develop and Maintain Client Service Plan for assigned Accounts.
- General assistance to Head of Client Services when issues arise pertaining to the client base including project work.
- Manage or influence other team members either directly or via matrix reporting
- Ensure that Firm is aware of any client specific issues prior to any meeting.
- Handle presentations and meetings with clients with or without PM involvement as required. This will require in-depth knowledge of the investment team's philosophy, process, strategies, and performance. Analysis and understanding of market and sector developments will be performed in support of this activity.
- Travel regularly to manage ongoing client relationships and respond to client inquiries. The individual should be willing to travel approximately 25% of the time.
- Provide input into presentation materials for product covered to be used in conveying key elements of the strategy.
- Develop monthly update piece on product covered.
- Edit and contribute to the monthly/quarterly attribution to clients
- Ensure that client service promises to clients are met for reporting and information provision
- Ensure that all client and contact information is entered and logged into our CRM system
- Maintain a high degree of technical fluency in the fixed income sector by staying abreast of industry and competitive trends.
- Cultivate strong relationships with all members of the Fixed Income team. Attend the regular meetings of portfolio managers and analysts.
- Work with the Consultant Relationship Management team to leverage the client/consultant link.
- Educational requirement: College Degree
- Series 7 required (can be earned within the first six months in role, if not possessed at hire)
- CFA and/or MBA Preferred
- Must have a minimum of 5-7 years working with Fixed Income issues, either on the sell or buy side.
- A thorough understanding of capital markets and portfolio management.
- Demonstrated ability in prior jobs to speak comfortably to represent the investment team and process to investors.
- Demonstrated ability to manage others directly or via matrix
- Must possess good interpersonal skills and written skills. Ability to explain relatively involved concepts in a clear and concise manner to others
- Strong project management and problem solving skills
- The role is prescribed within a well-established framework. However, the role holder is expected to play an active part in improving day-to-day procedures and how the work is to be tackled
- Responsible for planning own workload typically against a backdrop of changing priorities and/or external events for the coming quarter
- Is required to make routine judgments in situations and would be expected to seek assistance for anything complex or out of the ordinary
- Personable, collegial and team-oriented.
- An individual excited by client interaction but with a strong affinity for the investment side of the business.
- A demonstrated willingness to travel
