Vice President for Research Economic Development

WVU is currently seeking a dynamic, visionary leader to catalyze the research prominence of West Virginia University, a Carnegie Research University-High Research Activity institution that recently earned the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. With more than 32,000 students pursuing education in 191 degree programs, WVU is located in Morgantown, WV, Bizjournal s #1 Small City in America. The Vice President for Research will be responsible for growing the quantity, quality and diversity of WVU s research portfolio (from discovery and scholarship to innovation and translation to marketplace). The Vice President for Research is a member of the Senior Leadership Team, reporting in that capacity directly to the President. The Vice President for Research will partner with the Provost and the Chancellor for Health Sciences in the development and execution of strategic initiatives to advance the academic research agenda of the University involving faculty, staff, and students at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs). The Vice President for Research promotes the development of high-impact, multidisciplinary research proposals and activities, provides effective services to the faculty, facilitates the conversion of research ideas into spinoff technologies, represents WVU in regional, national, and international settings, partners with the Provost and Chancellor to strengthen institutional centers and institutes, develops effective collaborative relationships with academic leaders to develop increased doctoral and graduate programming, and exhibits the highest level of ethics in the conduct of University business. Qualifications include a sustained record of demonstrated scholarly accomplishment, sponsored research leadership and/or research program management experience, as well as knowledge of federal research policies and compliance regulations. An earned terminal degree is preferred. A demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit is needed. Familiarity with patenting and licensing, along with experience in converting research ideas into spinoff technologies, are desired. Industrial and/or government senior management experience is desirable, as well as a demonstrated reputation as an independent investigator or inventor recognized for high-quality research by external peers. Candidates must exhibits the highest level of ethics, openness, transparency, and commitment to diversity, as well as shared governance in the conduct of University business.
