Volunteer and Partnership Program Coordinator

DUTIES: Major Duties: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area partners with nearly 75 groups and the Volunteers-In-Parks program has over 1,300 volunteers who contribute over 165,000 hours of service annually. Incumbent serves as the partnership and volunteer program coordinator for Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, planning and managing both programs. The incumbent functions as the primary contact and liaison for the park's partner groups and potential/current volunteers. Evaluates the quality of the programs and effectiveness of meeting division and park goals; determines and implements ways to improve the program quality and effectiveness based upon evaluation data. Recruits, hires, train, and occasionally supervise volunteer staff. Supervises one GS-5 assistant volunteer program coordinator. Prepares reports and promotional material. Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary; occasional long hours and travel for meetings and special events are necessary. Working with various organizations may be intellectually, and sometimes physically, demanding. Work is sometimes active, requiring walking on uneven terrain, climbing, bending, stretching, carrying packages up to 40 pounds, and driving vehicles. Area Information: Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, just 80 miles west of New York City and 100 miles north of Philadelphia, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area attracts over 5-million visitors each year. Visitors marvel at the rocky crags, hemlock forests, tumbling waterfalls, and meandering river. Scenic drives take visitors through rural settings along historic roads and past some of the oldest houses in the Delaware River valley. The spectacular mountain and valley scenery are ideal backdrops for a variety of recreational activities that include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, biking, fishing, and hunting. The 70,000-acre park also includes the Middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreation Area and 26 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Nearby towns of East Stroudsburg, PA, Port Jervis, NY, and Newton, NJ, provide all services, including K-12 school, college, medical services and other community needs. Additionally, several smaller communities are adjacent to the park. Summers and winters are generally mild with average summer temperatures about 80 degrees, with some humidity, and average winter temperatures about 30 degrees.
