Job Description:
Wireless Generation is building a next generation data store and web service infrastructure that will empower a new ecosystem of innovative, data-driven, education-focused applications. We seek a seasoned technology executive to join our senior management team as VP Technology and lead our world-class teams of engineers and architects in delivering this stable, scalable, maintainable, responsive and highly usable multi-tenant education data platform as it becomes the largest in the nation. This executive must have the breadth and depth of architectural experience and engineering leadership to ensure this platform’s ultimate success.
Responsibilities of VP Technology:
- Drive major product, platform and application engineering initiatives.
- Develop and deliver against a clear technology strategy to reach business goals.
- Work closely with key product stakeholders to align technology and business objectives.
- Address tactical issues while maintaining strategic technology and organizational vision.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and overall excellence within the technology organization.
- Identify and solve complex technical issues as they arise.
- Consider and manage the full solution across technologies, organizations, and roles.
- Focus a cross-functional technical team to deliver measurable results on a consistent basis.
- Bring “vision” to ground in a scalable and practical way through commercial software.
- Optimize the scope and approach of the technical teams across their activities.
- Rapidly grow the team across geographic locations.
- Delight an emerging customer base with this new platform.

The successful individual will bring a deep sense of personal responsibility and accountability, along with drive, intelligence and passion both for technology and technical team management. The successful individual has proven his or her ability to work through conflict, build trust, and influence outcomes through outstanding interpersonal skills with all kinds of people at all levels.
The ideal candidate will have proven technology and team leadership experience and have previously operated a mission-critical, 24x7x365 software as a service technology environment while maintaining a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and extreme productivity. The VP Technology should have experience managing multiple product and platform roadmaps and effectively communicating throughout a large and rapidly growing product and services organization. An ideal candidate’s background would include:
- Degree in computer science, math, or a related discipline with preference given to an advanced degree.
- Minimum 15 years of experience, 10 of which was in more senior technical leadership roles.
- Extensive architectural leadership for major products and/or services.
- Experience setting the technology direction for teams, evaluating options, making decisions, and evaluating results.
- Proven experience establishing and maintaining technical and organizational best practices.
- Outstanding history of execution in complex environments. Proven experience hiring,inspiring, and retaining teams of exceptionally talented technologists.
- Experience with enterprise-scale agile development methodologies and their optimization.
- Successful delivery of products and/or solutions in many of the following domains: large-scale data storage and networking; data and systems integration; open source; business intelligence, data warehousing, and analytics; cross-platform mobile application development;advanced web applications; social media; 3rd party application ecosystems.
- Production experience with large scale data infrastructures
- Deep understanding of the full range of data storage options including: traditional databases, unstructured/less-structured data stores, markup-based technologies and information stores, etc.
- Experience leading software development organizations across multiple geographies.
- Ability to collaborate across multiple organizations at a senior level to map and influence business needs and deliver against these needs quickly and effectively.
