The Middleware Operations Unit Manager has overall management responsibility for the planning, service delivery, and coordination of activities for the Web and Application related infrastructure technologies. Candidate will be responsible for leading a team of 5 mid to high level engineers who will be responsible for installing, configuring, administering and supporting medium to large J2EE deployments including but not limited to WebSphere, JAS, JBoss, tcServer/Tomcat and Apache web server spanning multiple versions. The largest environment is a complex and highly available/clustered Web Application infrastructure spanning several DMZ's in multiple data centers with 900+ JVMs with connectivity to Mainframe, Windows, Unix, and Linux platforms. Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Middleware operational domain including software distribution, service delivery, and core product management.
- Responsible for Team Development and Business Relations with peers in other areas of IT.
- Responsible for developing and enforcing standards for the Middleware environments.
- Oversee the Middleware operational project portfolio.
- Perform people management activities, including hiring, managing associate performance, conducting pay, performance and career conversations and other aspects related to managing people in a results oriented culture.
- Responsible for the Middleware budget and license compliance and will manage all vendor relationships looking for ways to streamline vendor contracts and technology in the organization.
- Accountable for the performance of the team; associate engagement; cost, quality and timeliness of solutions and; the overall satisfaction of customers.
- Consult and collaborate with IT teams to build strategic, cost-effective solutions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with peers and customers with a focus on operational excellence.
- Maintain a good understanding of Aon's Enterprise IT environment, business applications and service level requirements.
- Ensure that requests for services from the Middleware Operations team are handled quickly, consistently, and with quality.
- Ensure 24x7 support for systems related to the role.
- Manage a global team, ensuring superior communication, teamwork and synergy between centers.
- Forecast and manage team productivity and availability effectively.
- Make fiscally responsible decisions, using cost/benefit analysis and other methods to ensure appropriate return on investment and find ways to increase value by reducing run rate
General Skills:
- At least 8 years of technical experience, of which 4 years as a Middleware Administrator, Lead, or Manager perferred

Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of supporting applications using J2EE architecture framework required with Websphere 4-7 and JBOSS 4.3/5.1 preferred
- Experience managing JAS 8, Apache 1.3-2.2.x, Weblogic 8.1/10.3, tcServer/Tomcat 6.0 and WMQ 6.0-7.0 is highly desirable.
- Knowledge managing .NET architecture is desirable.
- Experience managing Middleware related monitoring tools, including Wily and Patrol is highly desirable.
- Experience in a Linux / UNIX / Windows distributed enterprise environment.
- Experience managing upgrading and patching Middleware deployments is required.
- Experience managing Middleware security, including participation in security based audits, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and adding application certificates is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with IT Enterprise architecture.
- Experience installing, configuring, performance tuning and troubleshooting Middleware software is highly desirable.
- Able to read and work from technical manuals and other documentation.
- Experience and knowledge of current trends within JAVA based technologies.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in an IT field or relating experience.
- 8-10 years of experience working in an IT field.
- ITIL/PMP background or certification a plus.
- 2-5 years managing global teams of 5-10 associates in an enterprise environment.
