Compensation: $45,000 - $60,000
Nature and Scope
Filament is seeking an experienced web designer to help us launch an internal product line of learning games, as well as deliver on the quality expectations of our nation-wide client base. Our clients include iCivics, the Institute of Play, MIT, and other nationally prominent educational institutions with major web properties. Filament believes in making educational web resources that shine. This means we are looking for someone who:
- Can design on par with the top U.S. educational sites
- Can design rich but usable user interfaces
- Knows the ropes when it comes to browser compatibility and mobile web development
This position reports the CTO and has no direct reports. As the company grows this may change. Ideal candidates will have the ability to grow with the opportunity.
Authority, Responsibility Relationships
Authority:
- Creating designs based on current trends and best practices
- Defining and enforcing style guides for each site
- Mentoring and training more junior designers
Responsibilities:
- Collaborating with product owners to create unique web designs
- Revising designs based on user and stakeholder feedback
- Designing typography, iconography, and visual accents to go with the core design
- Implementing design in HTML and CSS
- Staying current on the latest tools and methodologies
Relationships:
Reports to: CTO
Direct Reports: None
Coordinates activity with: Web designers and web programmers
Measures of Success
- Designs are aesthetically appealing to the target audience
- Designs are thorough and extensible
- Works collaboratively with other members of the web team
- Few obvious visual defects in the designs and implementations
Requirements
Experience:
- 5 years of professional web development experience
- Two implemented designs for national or international brands
- One implemented design with rich interactivity or novel functionality
Required Skills:
- Expert in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Proficient in responsive design
- Proficient with HTML and CSS
- Capable of creating top quality designs and assets
Personal Characteristics:
- Highly creative
- Detail oriented
- Highly-developed aesthetic sense
Desired Skills:
- Proficient with SASS, LESS, or similar CSS processing language
- Familiar with new Adobe web design tools such as Adobe Edge and Breakpoint
- Experience theming a Content Management System such as WordPress or Drupal
