Under broad direction, operates with considerable latitude, provides expertise and guidance in analysis, modification and designs for multiple projects and/or projects of great complexity. Requires the ability to trade off innumerable, complex, highly interdependent variables and make timely decisions. Considered a subject matter expert in the application of standard materials and components. Investigates use of alternate materials and provides input on strategic sourcing of materials. Organizes, structures and completes projects in an independent manner or may lead design teams. Provides consultation and technology transfer to internal and external peers. Documents technology transfers when appropriate. Incorporates Reliability, HSE and Quality analysis techniques during the design process. Job role directly impacts a PSL's viability or its quality of service. Skills typically acquired through the completion of a undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline, and 10 years of related experience. Completion of a masters in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline is preferred. Incumbents at this level will usually hold a certification as a Licensed/Chartered Professional Engineer.

Will work as technical lead to design, manufacture, test and commercialize specialized down hole tools used in conjunction with Coiled-Tubing and Hydraulic Workover services to perform a variety of functions in a live well. A MS or PhD in mechanical or aeronautical engineering is required. Professional engineering licensure is preferred. 2 years of experience with PhD or 5years of experience with MS, in designing surface equipment or down-hole tools is desired. Job level and compensation will be based upon candidate’s credentials.

The position will be based in Houston Texas with Boots Coots RD team.

Job duties and Skills desired for this position are as follows;

•Lead a down-hole tool project from initiation to completion involving project management, designing, drafting, manufacturing, testing, commercializing, and creating technical literature and intellectual property associated with it.
•Prototype testing of tools and equipment as per design specifications to validate the operating parameters.
•Integrate, test, calibrate and troubleshoot down-hole sensors such as pressure, temperature, gamma, CCL and surveying sensor.
•Use solid modeling software, such as SolidWorks®.
•Create and review machine drawings using SolidWorks or AutoCAD®.
•Use Finite Element Analysis programs such as ANSYS® or Abaqus®
•Use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program such as Fluent®
•Use product data management (PDM) software, preferably eMatrix®
•Familiarity with project management software such Primavera® is a plus.
•Use SAP® for tracking purchase and production orders, lookup part inventory and costs is a plus
•Use MathCAD® and MatLab® to perform standard engineering calculations.
•Familiarity with mechanical metallurgy, selection of low alloy steel, nickel alloys and other specialized material for down-hole tools.
•Use elastomers such as o-rings, sealing elements, packer elements and be familiar with chemical, temperature and pressure compatibility of different elastomeric compounds.
•Use composites and thermoplastics for down-hole tools.
•Familiarity with NACE specifications and H2S compatibility calculations.
•Familiarity with solid mechanics, stress calculations failure criteria.
•Familiarity with fatigue and fracture mechanics, especially low-cycle fatigue of coiled-tubing.
•Familiarity with hydraulic calculations and fluid dynamics.
•Failure analysis and root cause analysis.
•Patent search, reading issued patents and applications is a plus
•Proficiency in MS Project and Advanced Excel use is a plus.
•Experience in calculating and understanding financial calculations such as NPV IRR, as it relates to project budgeting and proposal, is a plus.
•2-4 years field experience with Wireline, MWD/LWD or Coiled Tubing is a plus
•Experience developing Wireline, MWD/LWD and Fiber Optic down-hole measurement/logging tools is a plus.
