Summary
The Fund Accounting team is responsible for the efficient and timely maintenance of the books and records of alternative investment fund vehicles; the generation of investor reporting; and the management of the audit process. The team works closely with the corporate secretarial and financial reporting teams to ensure a seamless service delivery to clients.
The Accountant will be responsible for supporting the Fund Accounting Manager in managing the bookkeeping team for a portfolio of complex alternative investment fund structures administered by State Street and reviewing their output to ensure the highest level of accounting service is delivered to clients.
The Accountant will mentor and develop more junior members of the team and will act as a key client and auditor contact.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Taking ownership for the bookkeeping, accounting and reporting requirements for a portfolio of alternative investment fund structures and assisting the Fund Accounting Manager with the detailed reviews of the Trial Balances prior to release to the Financial Reporting Team and the review of investor reports prior to delivery.
- Support the Portfolio Reporting Team in reviewing daily NAV files as well as complex performance and analytics reports.
- Demonstrating good attention to detail in all work that is undertaken and an aptitude to develop review skills which will support the Fund Accounting Manager in reviewing all work produced within the team.
- The Accountant will, along with the Fund Accounting Manager, act as one of the key contacts for the client and the auditors and will assume responsibility for much of the day to day liaison and contact.
- The Accountant will work with the Fund Accounting Manager to manage the audit process: conducting detailed planning; being a central point of contact for all audit queries; ensuring the approaches adopted are appropriate and that issues raised are resolved expediently; ensuring that all parties are kept informed of the current status; and ensuring timely clearance for approving the accounts and ancillary documentation.
- Maintaining pro-active communication to ensure that the Fund Accounting Manager is kept appraised of current status and to allow them to accommodate periods of absence and/or peak demand.
- Conducting reviews of financial statements prepared by the Financial Reporting team, prior to release to clients and auditors.
- Working closely with counterparts on the Client Operations and Financial Reporting teams to ensure a seamless and co-ordinated client service delivery.
- Strong core technical accounting skills confident with: calls/distributions journals and driver reports; calculation and reconciliation of complex fees and the preparation and review of technical accounting reports (e.g. investor capital accounts) and the training of more junior team members in these areas.
- Confidence in building complex accounting reports to enable review and resolution of client/audit queries and to drive investor reporting needs.
- Ensure the team maintains files in accordance with internal policies and procedures.
- Coaching, mentoring and developing more junior team members, taking on line management as the role develops.
- Undertaking ad hoc requests and other specific assignments for a portfolio of alternative investment fund structures administered by State Street.
- An ability to lead by example, particularly in respect of performing work in accordance with internal policies and procedures.
- Planning workload, prioritising and managing own time accordingly, as well as the time and work-load of more junior team members, to ensure client service of the highest standard is consistently delivered.
- During any transitional phase from a team previously also conducting account preparation work, the Accountant may need to prepare financial statements for entities not yet assigned to a Financial Reporting team during the hand-over period.
- In addition to the duties listed above, the Accountant may be requested to perform any other ad hoc duties or projects as requested by the fund accounting manager.
Technical Knowledge / Skills Required
- Good knowledge of: GAAP; financial reporting requirements; and audit approaches in order to manage the financial reporting and audit process and drive for efficient sign-off of financial statements.
- Demonstrable initiative and the ability to complete all bookkeeping and review work and maintenance of associated files in accordance with the internal policies and procedures.
- Attention to detail to ensure the delivery of consistent, high standards.
- Ability to plan and organise yourself to meet challenging deadlines.
- A strong understanding of the transactions undertaken by entities administered by the London Fund Accounting teams (especially in the product area relevant to your role).
- Ability to learn quickly and work within a team under the guidance of a manager/mentor.
Minimum Education / Qualifications
- Holds a relevant professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA or equivalent).
- Evidence of strong mathematical and analytical skills.
Previous Experience
- Experience in the field of alternative investment fund accounting and/or other financial services industry experience would be essential.
- Experience in audit would be beneficial.
Management / Supervisory Responsibilities
Accountants would be expected to assist the Fund Accounting Manager to mentor and supervise the Fund Accounting team.
