Position Description:
GENERAL FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Industrial Sales Manager, the incumbent is responsible for assisting Moog Orrville customers or potential customers in the proper selection and use of products, providing technical assistance and resolving technical problems, both with systems and components, as they occur.
DIMENSIONS:
The Applications Engineer typically has responsibility for providing technical guidance for resolution of problems involving Moog Orrville products in specific applications as well as specifying an appropriate Moog Orrville product for a potential sale. Technical support is also required on a daily basis for the outside and inside Sales organization. Travel is required on average two times per month to customer sites.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The incumbent has responsibility for the technical support to customers within the Moog Orrville Site, or on other projects as assigned. The two most important requirements of this position are to project a positive image to our customers through a genuine interest in resolving problems and to possess the technical experience and ability to do this effectively.
The incumbent will generally work directly with customers, under the guidance of the Industrial Sales Manager. He/She must be prepared to speak effectively with persons ranging from highly skilled control systems engineers to others who know nothing of hydraulics or process control but "have a problem or idea" to discuss. A special ability is required in listening to and understanding customers who may have difficulty stating their problems or ideas clearly, and to assist them in methodically arriving at a sound technical conclusion, consulting with the Engineering group for assistance as required. Because of the complexity of the interactions, the incumbent must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
The technical knowledge of our products must include not only their use, but also a thorough knowledge of the internal components and design details, as well as knowledge of how the products interface with our customer's hardware to form the system. Technical support would be required for mechanical and electrical products.
The Applications Engineer is expected to provide feedback on customer field problems involving design or reliability problems and initiate the necessary corrective action to the product, under the direction of the Industrial Sales Manager.
The Applications Engineer will assist in the creation of specification sheets for new models, as well as assembly and test instructions. The incumbent must be familiar with CAD programs, the Moog Wide Web, and Moog operating systems.
The incumbent must be willing to travel to support the Sales organization on customer calls, to assist customers in the start-up of equipment or to work with customers in resolving field problems.
The successful incumbent will possess the following minimum education and experience: A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and one year of related experience; or a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and at least 4 years related experience. Alternatively, current enrollment in a 4-year engineering degree program and at least 7 years experience at Moog would be acceptable.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of Moog Orrville products and how to apply them.
2. Provide technical support for Moog Orrville customers, both over the phone and at customer's facilities, traveling as necessary.
3. Seek guidance from the Engineering Manager, Industrial Sales Manager and others, as necessary, so that knowledge and skills are enhanced over time in this position.
4. Provide feedback to Sales, Marketing and Engineering on new product ideas and applications, or on opportunities to improve products that are already in the field.
5. Assist in the writing of specification sheets, and Assembly and Test procedures for new or revised models.
6. Take a positive and active role in supporting the customer's point of view at Moog Orrville with regard to reliability or design problems.
