Appointment Information: This is a TERM position, seasonal (subject-to-furlough), with initial appointment made for 13 months. The appointment may be extended for up to a maximum of 4 total years, funding dependent. A subject-to-furlough position means an employee will be in a work/pay status a guaranteed minimum of 13-pay periods (6 months) per service year. Time in work/pay status will not exceed 24-pay periods per service year. It is expected that the incumbent of this position will be in pay status approximately 13 pay periods per service year. DUTIES: Back to top MAJOR DUTIES: Incumbent designs and independently conducts archeological surveys and multi-phased archeological projects involving documentary, archival and collections research; field investigations (both survey and testing); laboratory analysis of recovered data; and professional report writing. Identifies and records historic and prehistoric sites using appropriate GIS technology. Prepares historic preservation documents: compliance and background materials required under Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Archeological Resources Protection Act and National Park Service policies and guidelines for planning and construction projects. Prepares survey reports including determination of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. ADDITIONAL DUTY LOCATION INFORMATION: Glacier National Park and/or the surrounding area provide a variety of year round recreational activities: hiking, swimming, camping, fishing, ice fishing, canoeing/kayaking, boating, water skiing, cross country and downhill, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, biking, etc. The majestic mountain vistas, cool lakes and streams, the variety of wildflowers, and wildlife sightings are special attractions to the area. West Glacier has seasonal food and gas services. Columbia Falls (17 miles) has most amenities. All services including hospitals, theaters and shopping are available in Whitefish (28 miles) and Kalispell (32 miles). West Glacier has a grade school (K-6); Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Kalispell have K-12. To be minimally qualified for this position, you must meet one of the Basic Requirements as described below (A-C). A. Education: Successful completion of a Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; and Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school. OR Related curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in answer A (including archeological field school). B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. C. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE In addition to meeting one of the basic qualification requirements listed above, applicants must also possess one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (or equivalent) in the normal line of progression for this occupation or graduate level education as stated below. Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. For this position, specialized experience is experience planning and conducting archeological resource surveys, preparing archeological survey reports, and evaluating the significance of archeological resources. Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or a master's in archeology or equivalent graduate degree may be substituted for the specialized experience requirement. Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combination of education and experience of the type and level described above may be substituted for the specialized experience requirement. SELECTIVE FACTOR (MANDATORY) In addition to meeting the basic requirements and specialized experience described above, applicants must also meet the following selective factor in order to be considered for this position.
