The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Secretary to head its Division of Marketing and Communications.  The Assistant Secretary is an executive-level position whose primary responsibility is to serve as the Chief Marketing Officer. The appointee leads a 32 member team to develop, implement, and evaluate integrated marketing activities that promote Maryland’s competitive business advantages across multiple platforms including public relations, government affairs, research, creative services, advertising, events, interactive media, and policy.

 

Duties include: advising the Secretary, Deputy, and other senior staff of current marketing trends and recommending policies and programs; setting standards and policies for department-wide marketing, communications, and public relations initiatives; directing development and management of a proactive interactive, including Web architecture, design, and content, social media outreach, and online media and interactive resources; overseeing outreach between the Department and elected officials; and developing and administering the Division’s annual budget and goals.

 

Candidates should possess strategic-planning, problem-solving and management skills; organizational leadership capabilities, including personnel, financial, and administrative operations oversight. Excellent written and oral communications skills as well as strong interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates should have experience with Microsoft office applications and/or other relevant software.

 

Qualified candidates should provide a portfolio demonstrating any of the applicable following domain expertise: 

·         customer, corporate, community, and/or government relations

·         brand marketing campaign creation, execution and management 

·         interactive and new media development

·         collateral campaign design and development

·         public affairs

·         research analysis and informational resource development

 

Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in business, communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, or a related field and at least 10 years in a progressively responsible senior management position, with 10 years marketing experience preferred. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be accepted.
