The University of Iowa Technology Services organization (ITS), a campus-wide provider of technology services for academic, research, and service missions, is seeking an IT Field Service Technician, which will function under the direction of the Field Services Manager within the Enterprise Infrastructure department. This position will serve as an installer in a team-oriented group working with university staff and outside contractors. This position will participate in the building of IT closets, monitoring the materials and working with the schedules and service interruptions, which require excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide installation of the voice, data, and video physical communication infrastructure on a central and remote basis. These duties include field termination of copper, coax, and fiber optics for daily moves, add, and changes, as well as construction projects involving all phases of work; providing technical and functional deliverables to meet established service delivery standards and customer/user needs. This position requires regularly scheduled on-call and after-hours support.
This position will be filled as an Associate Communication Infrastructure Engineer (PIB1, Pay Level 2B).
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB DUTIES
· Apply basic knowledge of current and emerging technologies used in the development of University standards, National cabling standards EIA/TIA, NEC, NFPA, and BICSI. Understand and implement design documents as provided.
· Assists system layout and drawing with Communication Infrastructure Engineer or Senior Engineer.
· Assists in telecommunication analysis and recommends appropriate system concepts and layouts
· Independently troubleshoot physical cable plant problems and services, working with other groups as required. Report noncompliant information transport systems.
· Monitors, tests and documents copper, coax and fiber cable plant using common test equipment
· Inspect telecommunication closets for adherence to campus standards, including electrical and temperature. Assist in developing and implementing a closet annual maintenance strategy.
· Install (MACs: Moves, adds, and changes), test, and maintain information transport systems including pathways, spaces and cabling distribution systems to assure compliance with University and Industry standards.
· Provides support for the activation, repair, maintenance and documentation of campus and building voice, data and CATV services
· Responsible for efficient daily inventory management and accountability for projects and work orders, as well as verifications of circuits. Understand and execute established documentation standards and report issues and changes.
· Provides updated shop drawings and product submittals.
· Verify and document all voice, data, and video services to maintain accurate infrastructure records.
· Participates in the development of physical infrastructure policies and standards.
· Participates as a project team member. Exercise familiarity with project management terminology, project plans, and software tools specific to an assignment.
· May provide functional and/or administrative supervision for students/temporary staff; assisting in daily work. Complete tasks within time allotted with a high level of quality workmanship. May participate in workgroup hiring efforts.
· Provide verbal and written communication with technical and non-technical staff regarding interpretation of standards. Provide status reports on assigned work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Information Technology or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience may also serve to meet this minimum requirement. Experience (typically 6 months - 1 year) supporting communication infrastructure is necessary.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
· Ability to analyze needs and determine appropriate requirements for installation of voice, data and video services
· Knowledge of industry and regulatory design standards
· Strong leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, analytical skills and organizational skills
· Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages and ratios to job analysis
· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff
· Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse technical environment
· Experience in using personal computers and common productivity suite software and common applications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
· Ability to adhere to project budgets and operate within budgetary constraints
· Knowledge of and experience with OTDR, power meter and fusion splicing equipment
· Knowledge of the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) infrastructure in IT spaces to provide feedback to consulting engineers and Network/Communication Engineers
· BICSI Technician Certification is desirable
