In order to build a diversified portfolio of CPP assets, the CPP Investment Board invests in public equities, private equities, real estate, inflation-linked bonds, infrastructure and fixed income instruments. Headquartered in Toronto, with offices in London and Hong Kong, the CPP Investment Board is governed and managed independently of the Canada Pension Plan and at arm's length from governments.
Role Summary
We are presently recruiting for an Associate, Investment Research based in Toronto in Investment Research (IR) within the Total Portfolio Management (TPM) department with a primary focus on private equity investments, both direct (Principal Investing) and with external managers (Funds and Secondaries).
The Associate will work with other groups in Total Portfolio Management (TPM) and the Private Investments (PI) to support TPM investment recommendations, through:
• research, including quantitative modelling and qualitative assessment of private market assets/portfolios;
• recommendation of appropriate benchmarks, performance and risk expectations; and
• review of specific deal opportunities, including coordination of funding analyses and credit/market risk assessments.
Role-Specific Accountabilities:
• Act as a point of contact with deal teams on analysis of developed and emerging market private equity transactions.
• Advance the business relationship between TPM and PI.
• Act as subject matter expert, bringing in-depth knowledge of private equity to modelling of the global private portfolio.
• Assume lead responsibility in the recommendation of relevant benchmarks and the development of robust methodologies to assess forward-looking risk/return expectations.
• Collaborate in conducting research regarding private equity markets.
• Mentor less senior team members regarding the characteristics of private equity investments and their dynamics in an investment portfolio.
• Prepare and deliver clear and well structured research reports and presentations for internal audiences
In meeting these accountabilities, the Associate will demonstrate the qualities of integrity, partnership and high performance in all dealings with internal staff and when representing the organization externally.
If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:
• Masters or Ph.D. degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration.
• CFA designation preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in the analysis and modelling of private equity assets and portfolios; strong knowledge of the asset valuation process; sound understanding of the general partner/limited partner relationships and alignment of interests; fund investment structures and fee arrangements.
• Extensive experience with private equity data, e.g. Thomson (Venture Economics), Cambridge Associates, Burgiss.
• Experience in private equity research and/or due diligence; familiarity with the deal negotiation process is desirable. Proven financial modelling skills.
• Strong knowledge of corporate finance, macro and micro economics and investment portfolio theory.
• Understanding of quantitative techniques, specifically investment risks measurement, asset pricing, portfolio rebalancing, valuation modelling, portfolio optimization theory and related numerical methods, financial time series analysis, econometric modelling and statistical testing.
• Basic understanding of public pension funds and CPPIB’s role in regards to the Canada Pension Plan.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, both orally and in writing; able to explain proposals objectively but convincingly, anticipate and deal with objections, and gain agreement.
• Strong report writing, researching, technical, and analytical skills.
• Experience working successfully in project teams.
• Professionalism and integrity, in accordance with CPPIB Guiding Principles.
• Team player who enjoys a high performance culture.
• Able to self-start and work with light supervision, as well as in a team.
• Able to meet deadlines and work well under pressure on multiple tasks.
• Self-motivated, enthused and flexible.
• Proficient in quantitative/economic software, preferably MATLAB, Eviews.
