No Security Clearance Required about security clearance definitions Position Description Operate and perform preventive maintenance on high pressure steam boilers, piping and auxiliary equipment used in an industrial plant. Major duties include the following: 1. Operate and maintain high pressure steam generating equipment that supplies steam used for heating, hot water and processing. 2. Perform such typical duties, during normal operation, as making systematic checks of combustion-control systems and water-feed regulators by observing gauges and moving parts to detect malfunctions; making repairs such as packing valves and pumps, repairing small pipelines, replacing gauge glasses and washers; dismantling, cleaning, reassembling burners; tending auxiliary equipment such as boiler-feed pumps, mechanical draft-fans, oil pumps; making adjustments to ensure correct steam pressure, fuel-air ratio and water level. 3. Operate valves and regulators to direct flow of steam and water through proper lines or to blow sludge and scale from ud-drums, gauge glasses and other elements of pressure systems. 4. May make regular checks of air compressors to ensure uniform supply of air in plant systems by observing functioning of automatic controls and safety valves; regulating water flow; bleeding air filters to remove water recognizing malfunctions and taking minor corrective action such as regulating speeds, adjusting valves, changing oil and drive belts, replacing packing or shutting units down if major trouble develops. 5. Clean interiors and exteriors of boilers as required, by such typical means as draining, flushing and refilling with water; removing accumulated scale with scrapers and rods; inspecting tubes; wiping exteriors of equipment; cleaning and lubricating pumps and motors. 6. Manually set fuel feed, dampers, valves, ignite burners in emergencies or when placing units in or out of service; make functional checks after installations, major repair or long term shutdown; assist in installation of boilers and auxiliary equipment; make minor repairs to refractory masonry. 7. Ensure economical operation of heating system by making required adjustments to obtain satisfactory CO2 readings, proper stack temperatures and flue gas quality that avoids conflict with local air pollution ordinances. 8. May add sludge-deterrent to fuel oil and treat water with chemicals. 9. Observe prescribes safety regulations related to use and care of boilers; maintain clerical records of such typical items as fuel consumed, hours of operation, temperature and analysis of flue gases; maintain supply of replacement parts; maintain good housekeeping in work areas. 10. May assist maintenance employees in other occupations when boiler operation does not require undivided attention, including labor type work. Competencies Thorough knowledge of operations and preventive maintenance to high pressure boilers, generators and auxiliary equipment; ability to make systematic checks of combustion control system, detect malfunctions in the system and take corrective action, make all necessary repairs, maintain efficiency of the heating system. Basic Qualifications For Consideration Have you operated steam boilers over 100psi? Are you willing to work any shift? Do you meet the criteria described in the Typical Education / Experience section of this requisition? Typical Education/Experience 3 to 4 years experience in the operation and preventive maintenance of high pressure boiler systems. Candidates must also have required licenses.
