Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

Under direct supervision with technical direction from ophthalmologist, performs variety of technical, treatment, patient-attending, related clerical duties. Administers approved eye drops taking appropriate precautions in accordance with policies departmental procedures. Assists practitioner with minor surgery. Supports compliance Principles of Responsibility. Maintains confidentiality. Protects organizational assets. Exhibits ethics integrity. Adheres to applicable federal state laws regulations, accreditation licensing requirements, policies procedures. Reports /or resolves issues of non-compliance. Essential Functions: - Performs all patient care activities under personal supervision of ophthalmologist until completed American Academy of Ophthalmology Independent Study Course deemed competent. Performs under direct supervision thereafter - Directs, escorts or wheels patient into treatment/examination room. Explains test procedure reviews written material/instructions - Prepares appropriate equipment examination area. Positions patient. Upon successful completion of pharmacology course medication administration competency, administers eye drops once deemed competent - Per written guidelines, observes patient for unusual. Alerts practitioner or RN immediately of any unusual findings or concerns - Preps patient performs routine ophthalmic procedures, including but not limited to visual acuity measurement, color vision testing, lensometry, keratometry, testing pupil function, tonometry, automated perimetry, visual field testing. Perorms other related duties as assigned under guidance of supervising ophthalmologist. Conducts test to examine measure axial length, tensions, visual field using photography equipment. Takes retinal photographs. Develops photographs, as required. Performs applanation tonometry, immersion, lensometer readings - Preps patient for minor surgery procedures laser treatments in office. Removes applies dressings as directed. Learns to assist ophthalmic surgeon in cataract surgery - Records test results in medical record. Checks chart for completeness. Cuts mounts photographs as necessary. Completes includes data sheets in department patient file. Maintains files accordingly. Reviews patient chart. Obtains all necessary patient history. Maintains photographic records billing forms - Performs clerical receptionist functions according to policies procedures. Pends requests for prescription refills forwards to physician. After deemed competent, calls in prescription refill as authorized in writing by physician via complete prescription documented in patient chart. Maintains familiarity with types of tests required for various eye conditions/problems. Sets priorities schedules for expeditious accomplishment of patient testing - Maintains equipment supplies in clean, orderly, safe usable condition. Calibrates equipment according to manufacturer's specifications. Reports malfunctions to Bio-Medical Department practitioner. Inventories orders supplies to assure adequate stock. Inventories maintains surgical instruments in accordance with OSHA standards. Inventories maintains medications. Maintains, prepares stores operating room eye instruments. Orders intraocular lens clinic/operating room equipment - Additional essential functions as listed in the complete job description Qualifications: Basic Qualifications: - Two years of experience in ophthalmic area - High school diploma - Successful completion of Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) approved formal or home study ophthalmic assistant program - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) - Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification - Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, results orientation, teamwork, and written communication - Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the telephone - Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English - Training/giving and receiving instructions - Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g., organization, prioritization, proofing), concentration and alertness
