Principle duties and responsibilities include the following, other duties and responsibilities may be added. Handling Tongs - While tripping or making a connection, the floor hand (Lead Tong Hand) must lift or move tongs when making a connection. This activity will include lifting the tongs and lateral movement of the tongs to attach them to the drill pipe. The tongs are on counterweights and the exertion to maneuver them will vary from 10-30 pounds. the lifting range, up or down is 1-2 feet in the area of the waist. This activity is repeated and could be performed as many as 175 times in a 12 hour shift. Pulling the Slips - This activity is preformed by 2 or 3 workers and could be conducted as many as 175 times per 12 hour shift. The slips weigh between 100 and 175 pounds and the weight would be distributed between the 2 or 3 employees. The slips are located at floor level and would be lifted at a distance of 18-24 inches. Stacking Pipe - Involves manually pushing a suspended length of pipe to the area where the pipe is stacked during a drill pipe trip. The reverse activity involves restraining the suspended pipe and guiding it across the rig floor. This activity is performed in the standing position and could be performed as many times as 100 times per 12 hour shift. Handling the drill string This operation involves removing all pipe from the will bore and stacking it in the derrick. This operation will also include Tripping into Hole or Tripping out of Hole and making connections during operations. The tripping operations vary depending on the depth of the well and other factors. Employees may be involved in the tripping operation for the full 12 hours of their work shift. The Floor Hand is also responsible for catching and cleaning samples of formation cutting while drilling. If drilling in gas, they must keep the flair bucket burning. At times it is necessary for the Floor Hand to climb up the derrick and assist the Derrick Man in hanging the belly board or drilling up or drilling down. They must also be able to go up and grease the traveling blocks and bridle line sheaves. All employees working together must keep the rig clean, picked up and free of safety hazards. It is necessary that every one be mentally alert an physically fit during their shift. Requirements -Knowledge of related tools and equipment and their specific functions. -Knowledge of the drilling rig and rig operations. -The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. -The ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away from you, or to judge the distance between you and an object. -Able to work and communicate effectively with co-workers, clients, and other external contacts. -Must be able to distinguish ineffective or damaged equipment and report conditions to immediate supervisor for proper repair. -Must be able to recognize unsafe working conditions and make adjustments accordingly. -The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
