Chief Credit Strategist
Institutional Banking and Markets (IBM) provides relationship management and product capability for the Bank's major corporate, government and institutional clients. IBM offers Total Capital Solutions to our clients, ranging from core transactional banking to debt, equity and financial markets risk management products and services.
The Debt Research team is aligned to the fixed income sales, trading and origination businesses and is responsible for the Group's debt research, including fixed income structured products, quantitative research, bonds, credit and interest rates.
Role Purpose:
This position is responsible for leading the credit research team and providing strategic direction in line with the Fixed Income business and broader institutional business and bank needs. As an analyst, the Chief Credit Strategist is expected to develop and articulate robust views and ideas, including instant analysis to financial reports and events. They are also expected to produce high quality strategic research and maintain a strong marketing and publishing presence in the fixed income and financial markets. The clients will be internal (traders, sales and institutional bank) external (primarily fund managers and large corporates), with media communication. There is a key focus on provision of thematic research and executable trade ideas to enhance CBA's profile through provision of rated research.
Key Accountabilities:
- Leadership and management of the credit research function in line with the strategic direction of the debt research team, fixed income business and other division and bank needs.
- Strategic, planning and management support to the Head of Debt Research (2IC).
- Perception-influencing activities to enhance research reputation and profile with internal and external target client base, including written research, marketing and calling programs.
- Individual and team production of value-adding, relevant credit research and ideas (including presentations) to support clients meet their business objectives. This entails particularly close relationships with the fixed income trading, sales, originations and broader research teams.
- Ensure appropriate cost control and research quality, including attention to detail and reputation management.
- Contribute to product development and flow where appropriate.
- Pro-active acceptance of and adherence to all CBA editorial, media and privacy policies, and all management and compliance-related protocols.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
Essential
- Outstanding knowledge of global financial markets, particularly debt markets and products and including detailed specific knowledge of:
- the credit market, including corporate bonds, convertible notes, hybrid securities, credit default swaps and other derivatives;
- credit market and corporate financial analytical techniques.
- Strong general knowledge of:
- the structured finance market, including prime and non-prime residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), credit-linked notes (CLNs) collateralised debt obligations (CDOs);
- swap, bond and money markets, global pricing conventions, market drivers and related regulatory and macroeconomic influences;
- equity markets and related corporate analytical techniques.
- Excellent numerical and quantitative skills, including financial markets pricing and theory.
- Ability to write and comment on company, economic and financial-market issues quickly and concisely.
- Strong presentation and communication skills, including media skills and the ability to influence senior clients and executives.
- Team-orientated with proven skill in working in a team environment.
- Drive, enthusiasm and ability to work long hours if required.
- Tertiary qualifications in accounting/commerce (preferably honours or above).
- Superior understanding of the bank and division's role, functions and processes.
- At least 5-10 years experience in similar role.
Desirable
- Advanced tertiary qualifications in mathematics/finance/economics/statistics.
- Credit rating training and experience.
- Technical analysis/charting skills.
- Econometrics training and experience.
- Experience in computer programming, particularly a high level of Excel with a desire to learn VBA and other statistical/database packages.
- Media experience.
- Academic or industry journal publications.
