About the Job
This position is responsible for operating CNC machines to produce quality, conforming product in line with customer specifications, FMI processes and procedures, ensuring maximum efficiencies in the Machine Shop. As a technical machining expert, will be responsible for machining the more complex and difficult parts, generally acting independently and requiring minimal supervision/intervention. Responsible for training newly hired machinists in their area.
- Machines and produces parts in line with blue-prints and customer specifications meeting tolerance and quality requirements.
- Interprets complex drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to determine dimensions and geometric tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup requirements. Must also be able to work from minimal engineering sketches.
- Able to accurately load parts, set up and operate machines using the most appropriate tooling to create conforming parts.
- Able to prove complex CNC programs and edit/moderate programs where necessary.
- Able to determine feed/speed of machines specific to the material maximizing the number of machined parts without affecting quality.
- Able to produce tooling for use in CNC machines.
- Responsible for overseeing other machinists, advising on best practice and offering assistance when required.
- Responsible for training entry level machinists in machining best practice, blue-print reading, inspection, Company processes and procedures etc until fully competent to operate machines routinely with minimum intervention.
- Detects equipment malfunctions, out of tolerance machining, and adjusts machine, controls or control media as necessary to ensure quality of production.
- Operates a forklift and lifting devices for safe transportation of parts when necessary also ensures safety of forklift operations in work area.
- Works with supervisor, engineers, production control, quality and other shop personnel for assignments and to resolve machining or quality issues.
- Works with supervisor to identify process improvements; provides feedback on personnel productivity and training issues.
- Within the scope of the job requirements, will be required to adhere and comply with the state and federal law, the Company ISO Quality Program and procedures, Company policies and Safety and Environmental Regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, however will deputize for the supervisor when necessary and impart technical knowledge and experience to other machinists. When training entry level machinists the position will assume responsibility for the basic safety and work practice supervision of the trainee.
- Must have a minimum of 10 years of machining experience operating a variety of CNC machines including mills and lathes.
- Must have advanced knowledge of precision measuring instruments. Instruments should include but are not limited to calipers, ID and OD micrometers, depth gages, indicators and scales.
- Excellent knowledge of G-code programming language
- Must have working knowledge of the CAM program (Mastercam is an advantage) and programming language.
- Excellent knowledge of geometric tolerance and dimensioning
- Must be able to follow both written and verbal instructions, also give precise instructions to other machinists. Must be able to communicate in English (both written and oral) as it relates to the job.
- Excellent shop math skills to include, trigonometry, geometry and algebra for the purpose of calculating material dimensions for fabrication.
- Must have excellent mechanical inspection abilities and skills
- Fork-lift License
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
