Computer Science Instructor

POSITION PURPOSE: Instructors will be responsible for meeting classes, instructing, advising, assisting and tutoring students, and performing other tasks related to instruction as assigned. Instructors will be expected to spend thirty (30) hours a week on campus, excluding lunch hours, but including off-campus instruction, distance learning education classes, telecommuting, or job related meetings. Instructors realize that their professional responsibilities may occasionally require more than the expected thirty (30) hours referred to above. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The College and Business and Computer Science Department are committed to student success and work as a team toward that end. It is expected that faculty will participate in technical program development and management, curriculum planning and review, advising students, as well as being active in professional organizations. In addition to instruction, related assignments include, but are not limited to: Teach courses in computer literacy and computer applications, as well as some variety of courses that may involve operating systems, programming, networking, and/or web development course work. Continually upgrade content knowledge as needed. Other duties include service on department and college committees. AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS: May provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree in Computer Science or related field OR Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field plus a combination of relevant course and work experience. Demonstrated successful teaching experience with a diverse student body such as one found at a comprehensive community college. Willingness to learn new applications, languages, operating systems, and/or networking software as required by departmental needs. Evidence of ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with colleagues. Demonstrated commitment to teaching as a profession and to professional development. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following skills: Experience in teaching and developing computer literacy programs Fluency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) Interest or experience in the health informatics field At least one year full-time teaching (or the equivalent in part-time hours) at the community college level Demonstrated experience with course work development, instructional delivery and student management in traditional delivery and online computer courses at the community college level Experience with, or willingness to participate on, state-wide committees and boards Familiarity with current IT technologies and related careers IT, Web Development, or Software Development industry work experience Have experience with any one, or more, of the following: Experience with web development and design, including the Adobe Creative Suite applications Experience with programming languages such as C and/or C++, Visual Basic, VBA, ASP, ASP.NET and PHP Experience with Linux/open source applications Experience with a variety of current operating systems Database design and development experience Familiarity with educational theories and methods such as collaborative learning, critical thinking, problem solving, teaching and learning styles, web-based research processes, and proficiency-based outcome assessments PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as papers, files, boxes, equipment, computers, etc., and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, and standard office equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Typical classroom setting and lab locations. SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES: n/a SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of the Dean.
