Credit Risk Sanctioner – Property Lending recruitment
Purpose of role
The role holder will have leadership of a small team of credit sanctioners with responsibility for credit risk analysis, structuring of transactions and sanctioning, covering the Private Banking segment with a focus on large/unusual transactions including residential and commercial property. The role holder will deliver a world class credit service and ensure achievement of the team’s risk and business objectives. The role holder will ensure the optimal quality of the credit portfolio by applying best practice in decision making, subject to a maximum personal lending discretion that will be linked to experience, counterparty rating and collateral type.
Core accountabilities
The role holder will be responsible for leadership, coaching and development of a team of credit sanctioners, providing training and guidance on specific transactions as required. Prepare high quality credit papers and presentations to Group Credit Committees, Head of Credit Risk and other areas of the Group. Ensure the highest standard of credit quality through the structuring, sanctioning, monitoring and control of credit applications and maintenance of these standards both personally and as part of the Credit Risk team. Deliver professional advice on risk management matters, industry, geography and product specifics and competitor activity where appropriate and provide innovative credit risk solutions with the timely involvement of external specialists. Contribute to credit policy development, where appropriate. Exercise judgement and discretion in the evaluation and approval⁄decline of credit proposals, which lie outside credit policy as well as those within. Responsibility for personal adherence to governance, compliance and lending portfolio controls. Ensuring own conformance to policy and procedures within the Credit Risk Team.

The role holder will deliver service in line with SLAs agreed with business segment. The role holder will work in partnership with business colleagues and proactively anticipate, respond to and seek to exceed the expectations of customers. The role holder will work with business colleagues at a preliminary stage to ensure effective development and delivery of bespoke risk solutions for customers as appropriate. The role holder will proactively contribute to embedding agreed change management initiatives in support of process and quality improvements and development of credit colleagues.
Other Activities
The role holder will work closely with Group functions, leveraging Group capabilities, support the development and implementation of credit policy relating to new products and implementation of the credit monitoring and control of those products. The role holder will proactively contribute to the documentation process to ensure robust documentation by liaising with legal (both within Wealth and our external advisors) and following up on sanction conditions.
Professional⁄Technical experience required
Excellent technical credit skills in HNW and corporate analysis, including cash flows analysis and projections. Strong background in residential and commercial property lending. Working knowledge of traded products and derivatives and good understanding of the risks involved in these products. Good understanding of credit facility documentation, both generic and bespoke; both banking and traded products. Proven track record in building successful relationships with other teams and areas of the business. Previous experience of private banking, including understanding of investment products and their suitability for collateralised lending and assessment of lending values for different financial asset classes desirable. Strong oral and written communication skills good negotiation and influencing skills.
