DUTIES: This position is located in the Division of Maintenance and Engineering, Shops Branch and stationed on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The main purpose of this position is to provide janitorial services to NPS buildings on the North Rim. Regularly will drive pick-up and dump trucks up to one ton capacity (10,000 GVW). Other duties include general sanitation and grounds cleanup, cleaning vault and chemical toilets, litter pick-up, hand shoveling snow, and spreading salt and sand. Some work is performed adjacent to the rim. Will empty approximately 4ft-32 gallen cans a day, carrying to truck, bags can weigh up to 50 pounds. Will occasionally help higher graded workers do repair work. This position is also required to perform preventative and minor maintenance on vehicles. This position interacts with the public 8 hours a day. Must be able to continue working while still answering inquiries in a pleasant manner. This position will work weekends and most holidays. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderately heavy physical effort is used occasionally in moving, setting up, and working from ladders and scaffolds. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Frequently must lift and move objects weighing about 40 pounds, and occasionally objects weighing over 50 pounds. May continually be standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and walking moderate distances. Drivers exert light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls in addition to the above. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Weather conditions range from sub-zero temperatures with snow to high temperatures with long dry spells. Walking surfaces may be uneven and slippery. May be exposed to drafts, noise, fumes, dust, abrasives, chemicals, solvents, or other irratants. There is a chance of injury such as bruising, cuts, scrapes, falls, strains, etc. The work is exposed to vibrations from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid serious injuries while working on ladders, and using heavy powered equipment. Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather over prescribed routes in a controlled traffic environment throughout the park. Drivers are exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading vehicles. AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: This position is located at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, which receives, approximately, 400,000 visitors between May 15 and October 15. The North Rim Unit of Grand Canyon National Park is 215 miles from Grand Canyon Village (4 hours by car). Elevation is 8000 feet, with temperatures ranging from -5 degrees in the winter to the mid-80's in the summer. During summer months, concession facilities are available, such as a restaurant, a small market, cabins and gas station. No schools are available near the North Rim. The nearest established community with a full range of services is Kanab, Utah 80 miles to the north. Temporary employtees may obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared furnished quarters. Because of limited housing, when an employees is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family member and pets.
