Chevron's Deepwater Exploration Projects Business Unit (DWEP) is accepting online applications for the position of Deepwater Drilling Engineer to be responsible for providing deepwater drilling engineering and operations support for our Deepwater Gulf of Mexico projects. This position is based in Houston, Texas.

The drilling and completion activities being performed in Chevron's Deep Water Gulf of Mexico operations represent some of the most technically challenging well construction activities being undertaken within the industry. Given this level of technical complexity and the operational requirements of the dynamically positioned dual activity drill ships being used in these activities necessitates a very high level of drilling engineering activity, not only in the offsite planning but also the onsite drilling engineering necessary to ensure engineering and execution excellence.

Drilling engineers work as part of a functional group that supports asset teams. The position is responsible for performing technical drilling engineering for well design, cost estimates, project planning, operations support and review of rig requirements. Selected candidates will participate in field reviews, peer reviews, optimization studies, and gather local operational knowledge/experience. The Engineer will apply Capital Stewardship principles, Decision Analysis, Risk Assessment and Drilling Engineering practices. Drilling engineers are expected to be active members of Chevron's Global DC Networks and Communities of Practice in order to capture and share lessons learned and best practices with the work group and global DC community.

Position Details:
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver drilling engineering inputs for Chevron Project Development Execution Process (CPDEP) Phases 2 and 3 Decision Support Packages (DSP's). Include well design alternatives analysis, Value-Based Well Objectives (VBWO), Uncertainty Management Plan (UMP), probabilistic cost/schedule estimates, Basis of Design (BOD), RAM (Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability) analysis, Peer Assists, Sub-Surface Technical Reviews (SSTR), Peer Reviews, Complex Well Process and Risk Assessments.
  • Development of the drilling program and drilling procedure. Consolidation and preparation of the entire drilling program package including all approvals and endorsements.
  • Coordinate performance of required technical studies and drilling technology development necessary to ensure readiness for major capital project (MCP) execution; provides direction to Chevron Energy Technology Company and service partners involved in performing these activities.
  • Support consistent use and application of drilling engineering tools, procedures, processes, and equipment standards across the MCP teams; ensures that Best Practices and Lessons Learned are shared across DWEP projects and with the global Chevron drilling community.
  • Monitor drilling activities during the execution phase and supports appropriate use of Risk and Uncertainty Management (RUMS), Management of Change (MOC), and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes during execution.

    Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in an Engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in drilling design, operations planning and executing complex, deep, high pressure offshore wells.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate the work activities of suppliers, ETC, and other drilling engineers (project management skills)
  • Ability to effectively represent DC in multifunctional major capital project teams and with NOJV partners. Must have proven ability to communicate effectively through written, verbal, electronic and presentation means.
  • Experience in the practice of performance improvement, risk management, and category management.
  • Candidate must be capable of effectively mentoring lesser experienced personnel, as applicable.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10 years or more experience in drilling design and operations experience planning and executing complex, deep, high pressure offshore wells.
  • Experience in deepwater with subsea wells
