The Deputy General Counsel will report to SSgA's Global General Counsel and will be responsible for:
- Assisting the General Counsel in managing the day-to-day operations of the global SSgA Legal Department.
- Oversight of legal issues related to all aspects of SSgA's U.S. registered investment advisory, sub advisory, mutual funds and ETF business lines.
- Oversight of legal services related to alternative and private funds offered to SSgA's institutional clients.
- Identifying and managing regulatory risks and issues and providing solutions to minimize corporate exposure.
- Assisting senior management with development of innovative products and solutions to facilitate the growth of SSgA's registered funds and advisory businesses.
- Designing, reviewing, negotiating and finalizing complex legal plans.
Experience
The qualified candidate must have a minimum of fifteen years of legal experience preferably in both a law firm and an internal financial services legal department. Must have significant expertise within the mutual funds, registered investment advisory arena. Meaningful private and alternative investment fund experience is also required. Experience working with or for the Securities and Exchange Commission is a plus. Experience working directly in an investment management company is also strongly preferred.

Candidates will ideally possess the following important competencies:
- Management, Collaboration and Influencing Skills - As the successful candidate will work closely with the rest of the legal staff, senior members of the firm, and interact frequently with outside counsel and senior management, it is important that he/she be an effective manager and team player and have a track record of building positive working relationships with business leaders and other staff functions. Simultaneously, this individual must have demonstrated a willingness to express and argue his/her point of view, even in the face of differing opinions.
- Communication Skills: The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and have demonstrated the ability to demystify technical legal and benefit matters and articulate clear objectives and strategies to achieve them. His or her communication style should be crisp and concise as the managing counsel will be responsible for communicating the State Street's compensation and benefit matters with both internal and external parties.
