Summary: The Desktop Engineer is responsible for creating, maintaining, and delivering the corporate desktop image as well as evaluating, packaging and distributing software to the desktop. The position also manages OS security, system patching maintenance, and driver updates. This individual will interface directly with multiple teams in order to analyze, develop, test, and deliver flexible desktop computing technologies in order to provide a high quality desktop experience for end users in the organization. The Desktop Engineer is responsible for coordinating activities and communicating progress and status to other team members and management. Principal Job Duties: Oversee the day-to-day desktop lifecycle operation from beginning to end. Requires the pre-purchase assessment and planning; approval and procurement of systems; perform hardware setup and optimization; configuration and validation of desktop image and installed software; hardware deployment; provide support and maintenance; and perform end-of-life disposal, recycle, or replacement of system. Design and maintain solutions to automate software delivery to an enterprise environment in an effort to reduce overall costs and increase support efficiency. Responsible for the design, creation, deployment, and maintenance of software packages to be used for network distribution. Test package functionality on desktop builds to ensure compliance with standards and functionality of applications. Utilize various deployment tools to update complex software applications across various platforms. Manages and maintains the Altiris infrastructure and leverages the technology for use in patch management, software distribution, license management, and reporting. The Desktop Engineer is expected to collaborate with peers and resources in other departments to complete Altiris-related requests and projects. Lead the monthly patching activities for Windows based systems. Provide on-going operational support that includes operating system releases, upgrades, service pack installations, bug fixes, security updates, and any desktop system change activity. Mitigate risk to the desktop operating environment by working closely with corporate security and desktop support teams. Serve as the desktop technology subject matter expert for projects on implementing new technologies, or enhancing existing systems. Research and understand new desktop technologies and offer recommendations to senior management in an effort to drive business planning or budget approval.

Qualifications

Qualifications include: Bachelor s Degree, or commensurate experience in a related IT field, is required. Hands-on technical support experience (5+ yrs). Experience in desktop engineering disciplines, or similar work, in a medium to-large scale environment (3+ yrs). Experience Software Packaging/Deployment (2+ yrs). Application Virtualization is preferred. Advanced Symantec and Altiris CMS and/or IT Management Administration knowledge. Demonstrated superior hardware/software support ability. Advance Desktop image administration knowledge. Experience with Active Directory Group Policy administration. Experience Software license Management administration. Experience working in Asset lifecycle management environment. Experience administering desktop security hardware and software technologies. Possess extensive knowledge of cross platform environments. Support systems including desktops (physical virtual), laptops, mobile/telecom and tablet devices utilizing: Windows (XP 7), MAC, Altiris CMS/IT, Citrix, VMWare, TCP/IP, MS Office (2003 2010), Exchange Lotus Notes e-mail, Cisco VoIP, and/or other proprietary software. Candidate should have extensive knowledge of desktop systems, application software and associated desktop hardware, network, and server environments and be familiar with the development and maintenance of custom desktop software applications and their distribution methods. Out of hours/weekend support as required.
