Director
The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Small Business Development Center (SBDC) provides a wide range of business educational services for SE Wisconsin, with a focus on Racine and Kenosha counties, while accessing the resources of the statewide UW System. The primary purpose of the SBDC is to provide counseling services and educational programming to small business owners, managers and prospective entrepreneurs.
The SBDC fulfills its mission through collaborative working relationships with UW-P faculty and staff, and also business and economic development organizations throughout the two county area. The ongoing relationships extend to a wide variety of external audiences.
The SBDC educational programs and services are consistent with stakeholder requirements. The Parkside SBDC is one of 12 SBDCs throughout Wisconsin funded in part by the US Small Business Association. The SBDC is a unit of the UW-Parkside School of Business and Technology and a partner in education with the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The UW-Extension Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (DEED) office oversees the state network.
The SBDC Director reports to the dean of UW-Parkside’s School of Business and Technology. The Director also has a reporting relationship with the Director of the Wisconsin SBDC (WSBDC) in Madison.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Administration: The SBDC Director is responsible for the overall planning and administration, coordination, and evaluation of the services to business and industry in a two-county service area.
- Develop strategic plans with the staff and ensure alignment with campus, college, WSBDC and SBA goals.
- Recruit and supervise employees, and ensure productive and supportive work environment.
- Plan and execute balanced budgets consistent with campus requirements and WSBDC grant requirements, including quarterly financial reports.
- Develop and implement SBDC marketing strategies, including stakeholder communications, reports, slide presentations, newsletters, web site and brochures
- Supervise contract training and research projects
Direct Services: Supervise all educational services to small business owners, managers and prospective entrepreneurs, including counseling and training seminars.
- Supervise all SBDC counseling functions, ensuring high quality services and measurable outcomes; provide direct counseling services to clients as needed.
Supervise all SBDC training and professional development services; plan, promote and teach seminars as needed. Plan for new and established market-driven education
- programs that generate net program revenue.
- Recruit and supervise counselors and trainers to enrich the base of technical expertise and maintain the capacity of counseling services
- Maintain a statewide network of service providers and expert trainers to enhance the outcomes for clients.
- Invest in professional development to ensure technical assistance and quality of education is accurate and resources are current.
- Ensure compliance with WSBDC grant requirements for accurate records management
Entrepreneurship Instruction: Provide instruction for one course per semester in entrepreneurship within the School of Business and Technology
- Contribute to Parkside’s Certificate in Entrepreneurship Program by building connections between SBDC clients and projects contained within select course work Provide connections between SBDC clients and students that may be seeking independent study or internships
- Provide connections between SBDC clients and students that may be seeking independent study or internships.
- Provide connections between SBDC clients and potential projects facilitated by the Ralph Jaeschke Solutions for Economic Growth (SEG) Center.
Economic Development: Provide leadership in regional initiatives, maintaining collaborative working relationships with business and economic development organizations throughout the two-county Region on behalf of the SBDC, the College and the University.
- Represent the university and the SBDC at economic development events
- Work with the other organizations to leverage resources and create an integrated array of programs and services for business owners and professionals
- Host special events that reflect the university, SBDC and community collaborations
- Develop working relationships with UW-P faculty members to facilitate faculty involvement in the SBDC and college outreach activities
- Host guests to campus including regional business leaders, UW System administrators, UW-Extension administrators, auditors and other stakeholders.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the start-up business and the ability to provide consultation and services to local small businesses in topics such as: business plans, legal concepts, budgets, hiring, marketing, financing, entrepreneurship, professional networking etc.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and staff in order to achieve department goals.
- Ability to be a visionary leader in the context of the regional economy.
- Ability to provide a key role in bringing about an integrated and cohesive array of educational programs and services for small- to mid-sized business owners.
