position description

The Director, Clinical Documentation and Coding has leadership responsibility and accountability for clinical documentation and coding throughout the organization. This position is responsible for facilitating and obtaining appropriate physician documentation for any clinical condition.  He/she facilitates the accurate representation of clinical coding documentation through extensive interaction with physicians, nursing staff, and other patient caregivers, preferably during the course of inpatient care at the hospital.  The position is responsible for ongoing physician clinical documentation training.  The position is also responsible for Recovery Audit Contract clinical and administrative management and appeal writing, as well as being a key member of the hospital's denial and appeal management team.  The position is manager of the Coding Staff and outsourced coding function ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, regulatory agencies and that appropriate reimbursement is received for the level of services rendered to patients.  The position is also responsible for managing the hospital's transition to ICD-10.  Perform related duties as required. 

 

Certification: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required

Education: Associates Degree in Health Information Administration or related field required; Bachelor of Science in Health Information Administration, or related field preferred.

Experience: 15 plus years related experience in the field of coding

Special skills: demonstrated knowledge of ICD9CM/ICD10CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines.  Demonstrated knowledge of multiple DRGs system, knowledge of APC system.  Demonstrated knowledge of multiple hospital reimbursement methodologies; federal, state and payer specific regulations, policies and compliance standards pertaining to documentation, coding, billing and disclosure of health information.  Ability to maintain a working knowledge and involvement in development of case management process, as well as case management software. Knowledge of Interqual guidelines, preferred.  Strong demonstrated negotiation skills, professional and cooperative demeanor with patients, physicians, fellow employees, and insurance representatives.  Strong analytic skills necessary to clinically assess medical records.
