Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 34,000 students and 3,000 employees in 87 schools and other sites. The Facilities Services Department is responsible for approximately 5.1 million ft2 of active and leased space.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This role will support the Assistant Superintendent, Facilities Services, with the intention of succession to the position of Assistant Superintendent, in the following responsibilities:
§ Administers and manages the property, maintenance, custodial and printing branches of Facilities Services;
§ Coordinates the planning, design and construction of all new facility capital programs and modernizations;
§ Manages the procurement, development and disposal of District property;
§ Represents the District’s interest in land planning, facility operation and capital procurement with Edmonton Public Schools, the City of Edmonton and Province of Alberta;
§ Plans construction, modernization and maintenance projects to schools so that they minimize impacts on staff and students;
§ Implements and manages procedures and practices that ensure quality standards for work performance by Facilities Services staff and outside contractors;
§ Develops and implements an effective communications plan so that administrative staff and school personnel are informed of maintenance work, projects and related work that is performed on district schools and buildings;
§ Prepares the annual operations budget for the Facilities Services Department. Manages the assigned budget, monitors expenses in consultation with the Chief Financial Officer and the Internal Auditor. Oversees the purchase of all related equipment, supplies and resources;
§ Participates in and provides information as necessary for all Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) liaison meetings;
§ In partnership with Human Resources, negotiates collective agreements with AUPE.
Qualifications:
§ Engineering Degree;
§ Five years experience in design/construction administration;
§ Five years experience at the managerial level;
§ Ability to negotiate contracts;
§ Knowledge of commercial real estate is desirable;
§ Good working knowledge of the educational field;
§ Knowledge of planning principles/procedures;
§ Strong project management skills;
§ Effective oral, presentation and written communication skills.
