Engineer 3, Network Engineering


Tasks:
- Develops practices and procedures for network installation,
maintenance and operation.
- Develops and implements test and acceptance criteria for network
elements.
- Schedules equipment activations, customer-affecting network
maintenance - develops documents of customer networks for network users.
Meets with potential customers, designs solutions, works with vendors
on pricing and implements solutions that are adaptable to customer need
changes.
- Exercises judgment during incident management, site design, network
configuration and network activation to ensure efficient use of funds
and time.
- Designs network site planning for multiple regional network sites.
- Represents Regional Company interests with providers to ensure timely
delivery of circuits.
- Develops and maintains network element documentation and inventory.
Maintains appropriate inventory or network spare equipment for rapid
restoration.
- Orders, tracks and reports on all internal and external wired and
wireless connection activation activities.
- Develops cost proposal documents.
- Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters
of significance.
- Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work
nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) as necessary.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
The design engineer will be responsible for taking customer location and product specifications and developing network designs and bills of material to meet those specified requirements for Metro-Ethernet or Cell Backhaul based services.

- Designs are submitted with complete, correct information to ensure all departments can collaborate on service delivery, to enhance client relationship by providing what they need, and to demonstrate financial responsibility to the company.

Major Responsibilities:
- Receives work-order from Sales verifies customer information is correct, service is correct and all necessary information is provided.

- Graphically identify customer locations and issue fiber request to determine cost of required fiber build.

- Determine if opportunities fall within Comcast Franchise and the area is serviceable. Reach out to alternate providers as needed for out of franchise meet-points.

- Develop preliminary design and identify transport requirements.

- Determine transport cost between markets/ Divisions utilizing existing legacy long haul system and/or national backbone as required.

- Coordinate capacity checks on existing network to determine availability and reserve bandwidth and or ports on required equipment.

- Monitor and provide assistance as needed to local cable personnel in developing fiber costs (OSP ISP)

- Work with CRAN engineering groups to develop transport costs.

- Receive Fiber costs and distances and transport costs and further refine initial design.

- Request cost for equipment needed and finalize design and complete costs.

- Complete Business Case template with Sales input.

- Submit Business Case to BCR review, monitor progress through the system and address any issues throughout the process.

- Receive signed contract, forward fiber builds to division and initiate equipment ordering process for required equipment based on BOM portion of Business case.

- Participate in initial kick-off conference with customer to ensure field forces have everything required and understand work to be completed.

- Engineer II also will be required to:
a. Serve as technical advisor to design engineers
b. Facilitates process to ensure intervals are met
c. Reviews BC's prior to submission to review process
d. Travel

Required Skills:
Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree or Equivalent
- Engineering, Computer Science

- Generally requires 5-8 years related experience
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Metro Ethernet network knowledge

- Knowledge of CWDM/DWDM Transport.

- Knowledge of IP services.

- Experience in documenting designs on Visio and GIS based systems.

- Microsoft office suite

Desired Skills and Abilities:
- MEF based knowledge

- Layer 2/3 switching/ routing knowledge

- SONET/ATM network knowledge

Work Experience/Education/Certification
- 3-5 years directly related engineering experience

- College Degree in Engineering or relevant work experience

- Certifications as required.
