Gas and Power Market Risk Analyst – Asset Backed Commodity Trading Desk – £50K
My client is a leading Asset-Backed Commodity Trading company focussing on oil, gas and power and are looking to further grow their business substantially in the coming 18 months.
In the short term they are looking to add a Market Risk Analyst to work alongside the Head of Risk in identifying the principle market risks within the Gas and Power trading portfolio, collaborating with internal stakeholders to ensure the key risks are communicated accurately.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with trading mandate through the daily production of a daily risk report detailing positional and other risk usage against limits for the trading portfolio enabling stakeholders to be appraised of key trading risks
- Develop and perform sensitivity analysis on the portfolio to enable identification of potential scenario-driven risks and exposures to provide more in depth analysis of the company’s position
- Own and enforce a robust framework of data integrity to ensure that accurate deal entry on a daily basis and that that errors are brought to light and swiftly rectified to enable compliance with internal audit and Trading policies.
- Comply as required with Corporate policy to ensure that required levels of communication are maintained and to facilitate timely periodic submission of the company’s portfolio exposures to ensure good lines of communication with Head Office
- Assist in the production and development of enhanced risk models to enable more detailed analysis of the trading portfolio and to facilitate greater communication with the trading desk to enable identification and evaluation of risk through effective collaboration with other members of the Risk team
- To assist the wider corporate effort with respect to business expansion, ensuring that Risk is adequately represented, and that new business requirements are correctly captured through the System of Record and any reporting and analysis that is required subsequently
Key Challenges
The Market Risk analyst works in an environment with multiple stakeholders across multiple functions. It is important to balance the business requirements against corporate risk policy and appetite and strive to achieve balance between these, whilst at all times maintaining open lines of communication with all parties, showing flexibility of approach and striving to obtain meaningful analysis and results.
Key Requirements
- Educated to degree level in a numerate, business or scientific discipline. Experience of trading desirable but not necessary
- Solid experience of European power and gas markets, including a high level of knowledge of asset-backed trading, particularly the workings of at least the following facets of the market: gas storage, gas swing, gas transportation, power generation.
- Strong knowledge of options, the sensitivities thereof, and the ability to apply this knowledge to an asset-backed business model. Knowledge of FEA models for energy assets.
- An in-depth knowledge of the principles of risk management including Value-at-Risk and stress testing. The ability to assist with validation of PL reporting in the context of prevailing exposures
- A track record of working in the trading floor environment with the ability and confidence to deal with the robust personalities found therein. Good communication skills with the ability and confidence to distil sometimes complex subject matter into easily digested information
- Sound Excel (VBA) and Access (SQL) capabilities
