Hardware Systems Engineer

We currently have an opening for a Hardware Systems Engineer on a project for the Bureau of Consular Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. This is a full time technical team leadership position and is available immediately. The candidate will work in a large distributed data center environment with hundreds of servers and terabytes of storage. The work locations include facilities located in Ballston, VA, Beltsville, MD, Washington, DC Culpeper, VA.
Minimum Requirements:
- U.S. citizenship
- Secret Security clearance is required and will be obtained by SSCI prior to start of employment
- Technical degree or equivalent work experience
- 5 years minimum experience in large-scale, mission-critical organizations
- Systems Administration / Systems Engineering experience
- Microsoft MCSE or MCP in Windows 2003/2008 server security or SMS
- Work experience with SMS and Antivirus applications
- Initiative, self-motivation, and continual hunger for knowledge
General Roles Responsibilities:
- Installation and configuration of servers, SANs, tape libraries, switches and related equipment
- Installation and configuration of operating systems, drivers, firmware, and OS patches
- Troubleshoot and performance tune hardware and operating systems
- Coordinate installation, repair, and upgrades with project managers and vendors
- Develop, document, and apply standard procedures for allocation of SAN storage arrays, LUN management, network address allocation and VM environments.
- Manage configurations, implementations and maintenance of system management application technologies, including Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0, Microsoft System Management Server (SMS), Dell Open Manager (OM) and other tools used to manage the environment.
- Work with Engineers and Security Analyst to bring servers into DS compliance.
- Take appropriate corrective actions to bring non-compliant servers into compliance..
- Manage, monitor and deploy all Information Resources Management (IRM) Bureau’s approved OS patches, Services Packs and hot-fixes leveraging SMS.
- Work with Network Engineer to manage the SMS environment and develop application deployment packages and advertisement.
- Work with Network Engineers and IRM security team to deploy SEP.
- Utilize Symantec SEP Management console to verify virus signature file updates are being deployed, Identifying and resolving all SEP deployment issues.
- Work with technical writing staff to develop and document standard processes for server installs, upgrades, and other repetitive tasks
- Manage and monitor event logs, backup status, and implement automated tools for monitoring and reporting system status
- Participate in a team environment to provide input, meet established objectives, lead individual projects, and share in team success
- Provide guidance and support to other system administrators and insure seamless and non-disrupted changes are implemented.
- Complete all required administrative duties and paperwork in a timely manner.
- Provide 24x7 on-call support for systems administration
A qualified candidate will have a high level of competence and experience in the following areas:
- Microsoft Windows operating systems (2003 Server, 2008 Server, XP)
- Red Hat Linux and/or Unix proficiency
- In-depth knowledge of installation, configuration, management of VM Ware, V-Center, and VM environments
- Server hardware (Dell and HP)
- SAN storage subsystems (EMC and NetApps)
- Networking
- Security and Antivirus
- Microsoft SMS
- Excellent communication skills
- Time management and the ability to multi-task and re-prioritize based on urgency
It is desired, but not required, that the qualified candidate will also have experience in some of the following areas:
- IIS web servers / web services
- Scripting / programming
- Large / distributed mission-critical data center operations
- Large EMC SAN storage subsystems
- Oracle databases / Oracle RAC databases
- F5 traffic management servers
- NetIQ monitoring tools
Clearance:
- Candidate must be a US citizen
