Heads of Investment Strategy and Portfolio Construction recruitment
Coal Pension Trustees Investment Ltd (CPTI) advises the Trustees and manages the assets of two closed pension schemes; the combined assets of the two schemes are around £20bn. Both schemes have stretching real return targets and can operate in a dynamic, unconstrained manner across a very broad range of asset classes and financial products; the investment philosophy of the Trustees is to focus on the medium to long-term investment horizon supporting a dynamic relative value approach. There is a strong sense of alignment throughout the organisation leading to a culture of innovation and success. Due to an internal promotion the organisation is looking for a replacement Head of Investment Strategy and has also created a new role of Head of Portfolio Construction.
Head of Investment Strategy :
- Lead the strategic investment debate within the CPTI team and with the Trustees, developing, articulating and converting Trustee benefit objectives and tolerances into investment strategy.
- Develop investment ideas through the analysis of most asset classes globally for an absolute return investment portfolio over a medium to long-term time horizon.
- Develop a full understanding of the functioning of the schemes and their liability profiles, positioning investments to achieve diversified sources of growth relative to the funding position of the schemes.
Experience and skills sought:
- The ability to understand the Trustees’ vision for the running of the schemes and translate that effectively into dynamic investment strategy.
- Experience of analysing asset classes and investment themes globally, identifying investment opportunities in the medium to long term. The ability to drive consensus, presenting and arguing opinions clearly and with conviction.
Head of Portfolio Construction:
- Responsible for decisions on the execution and realisation of the Trustees’ investment strategy.
- Deciding the appropriate method of achieving exposures to different asset classes taking account of cost, liquidity, performance and other factors.
- Responsible for the ongoing mandate and implementation monitoring of the Schemes investments, building relationships with key financial counterparties and service providers.
Experience and skills sought:
- A full knowledge of the breadth of asset classes and the implementation vehicles available will be key, as will be a willingness to use all of the available modes of investment implementation that best achieves the Trustees’ objectives in both ‘beta’ and alpha’ space.
- The ability to think laterally about the best way to gain the Schemes’ required asset class exposures in order to achieve Trustees’ objectives.
