The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) is seeking a Junior Research Scientist to support the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC), located at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Fort Sam, Houston in San Antonio, Texas.  HJF provides administrative and management support to DVBIC.

 

DVBIC is multi-site medical care, clinical research and education center.  It is a unique collaboration of the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system, and civilian partners.  The mission of DVBIC is to serve active duty military, their dependents and veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) through state-of-the-art medical care, innovative clinical research initiatives and educational programs.  DVBIC is primarily responsible for support of clinical operations in the DVBIC network which includes 10 military treatment facilities, 5 veteran hospitals and 2 community re- entry civilian programs.  In addition, the office has visibility and contributes to the expertise of DoD level related clinical activity related to traumatic brain injury.

 

The incumbent will work in collaboration with staff of DVBIC, the Research Imaging Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA), and the Radiology Department at BAMC, to support neuroimaging research with military service members who have sustained TBI.

 

Responsibilities:

 

1.      Performs data processing for functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging data.

 

2.      Supports collaborative neuroimaging research nationwide across the DVBIC network of DoD and VA sites.

 

3.      Coordinates with principal and co-investigators regarding technical problems affecting research efforts.

 

4.      Attends training seminars and lectures to learn novel neuroimaging analysis methods.

 

5.      Provides formal and informal instruction on image processing methods to clinicians and DVBIC staff commensurate with experience.

 

6.      Directs quality assurance studies in the areas of responsibility.

 

7.      Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Advanced knowledge and proficiency in advanced research principles and design.  A background in structural and functional neuroimage processing and analysis, and the application of cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychological assessment to the field of neuroradiology; ability to function independently with a high degree of professionalism; excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with staff at all levels to foster collaborative research activities.

 

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Ph.D. degree in psychology, neuroscience or a related field, with relevant postdoctoral research training.

 

Minimum Experience:  2-4 years of behavioral neuroimaging research experience or relevant practical graduate/post-graduate program training.

 

Physical Capabilities:  Walking, standing, and sitting.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  The evaluation of performance for this position will be done by the DVBIC Research Neuropsychologist, with input from the DVBIC Senior Scientific Director and the site supervisor at the Research Imaging Institute at UTHSCSA.

 

Work Environment:  Well lit and heated offices in a military medical center and academic health science center. Work will be conducted in the radiology laboratory settings at UTHSCSA and BAMC.  Travel between BAMC and UTHSCSA for regularly scheduled meetings and other mandatory DVBIC activities.
