We currently have an opening for a Laborer at Wheelabrator Portsmouth Refuse Derived Fuel Plant.
Summary of Job Duties:
- Scans waste being processed and removes materials that cannot be converted to fuel either by hand or using hooks or rakes. Moves the items removed to the appropriate disposal area.
- Clears materials jamming processing equipment by stopping the machinery and removing the materials. This may require walking on the solid waste being processed or entering the machinery in tight spaces to remove the materials jamming the machinery.
- Operates a bobcat to move and dump hoppers that contain materials that cannot be processed.
- Cleans process areas using hand tools and high pressure air hoses. Wears a respirator and a protective suit when cleaning using high pressure air equipment and performs some cleaning work in cramped spaces.
- Directs traffic entering and exiting the work area, using verbal commands and hand signals. Scans materials being dumped for items that cannot be processed such as tires, batteries, rugs, tapes and similar items and removes those items before they can be processed.
- Operates a forklift and pallet jack to unload and load vehicles and to transport waste for destruction. Performs pre-use equipment checks before operating the equipment and performs minor maintenance on equipment or notifies the supervisor when discrepancies are noted.
- Performs manual labor lifting and moving materials to different locations throughout the facility and in cleaning RDF facilities, equipment and grounds.
- May be assigned as a lead worker of a crew by assigning tasks and checking to make sure assigned tasks are done properly. May be assigned to train and lead the work of contract and temporary laborers.
- Trains to operate heavy motorized equipment, and on an occasional basis, may operate the heavy equipment.
- Works 3rd shift and overtime as required.
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent.
- Prior experience using hand tools successfully.
- Mechanical knowledge and skills sufficient to perform the tasks listed above.
- Prior experience operating light motorized equipment with some heavy equipment experience preferred.
- Qualified candidates must work 3rd shift and rotating shift as required.
