Litigation Senior Lawyer
Job Purpose:
To provide legal advice and support to Citi businesses and management throughout the Europe, Middle East Africa ("EMEA") region in connection with a broad range of contentious issues and disputes. The matters advised upon will be of varying significance and complexity and will include civil/commercial litigation as well as contentious financial regulatory issues.
Working as part of a team, the workload will be extremely varied and could relate to any business area or product and/or to any one or more of the 54 countries in which Citi does business in the EMEA region.
Job Background/context:
Reporting to the EMEA Head of Litigation and based at Citi's Canary Wharf offices in London, the successful candidate will form part of a busy and highly effective team of six lawyers (plus legal and administrative support staff) who sit within the EMEA General Counsel`s Office ("GCO") and who provide support and advice across the full range of Citi's businesses in the region. Those businesses include not only commercial and investment banking, but also Citi's consumer and private banks as well as its transaction services division (CTS).
Key Responsibilities:
The work involved and related responsibilities will typically include the following:
- Advising on disputes involving investment and commercial banking transactions, equities and fixed income sales and trading; transaction services (cash management, trade finance and securities funds services); consumer banking; and/or private banking /wealth management.
- Advice and assistance to Compliance colleagues with regard to Anti-Money Laundering and Bribery/Corruption-related issues.
- Working with Citi's Corporate Affairs team in relation to any related media coverage.
- Working with Citi's Security and Investigative Services ("CSIS") team in relation to fraud-related and other investigations.
- Advising on recoveries issues, including those arising out of domestic and cross-border insolvencies.
- Managing the conduct of regulatory and legal proceedings, criminal and civil, to include the selection and instruction of local external counsel and the ongoing management of related legal costs.
- Working with local Citi internal lawyers throughout the region.
- Advising upon the nature and effect of Court Orders received in connection with customers and clients (e.g. freezing orders; third party debt orders; insolvency-related court procedure etc);
- Assisting in maintaining litigation reporting database for the preparation of reports to senior management.
- Conducting investigations and inquiries into regulatory issues in connection with EMEA businesses.
- Providing US Citi Legal colleagues with local assistance throughout EMEA in connection with US litigation and/or with requests for information and documents received from US regulatory authorities.

The successful candidate will deal on a day-to-day basis with colleagues in Citi's other control functions (in particular, Compliance, Internal Audit and Risk) and will likely gain exposure to senior members of Citi's management team, both regionally and globally,
Knowledge/Experience:
- Banking and finance regulatory and litigation experience preferred.
- Relevant experience should have been obtained either in private practice with a City firm or in-house with another significant financial institution.
- Experience of managing foreign lawyers, where cases span a number of jurisdictions would be an advantage.
- Experience of managing/conducting substantial litigation (as a team leader or member) and experience of running case-load of smaller cases would also be advantageous.
Skills:
- Fluency in spoken and written English is essential.
- Familiarity with other European languages an advantage, but not a pre-requisite.
- Basic IT / computer skills a requirement (Word, Outlook etc).
Qualifications:
- Candidates should be qualified legal practitioners in the United Kingdom or another relevant jurisdiction.
Exceptional candidates who do not meet these criteria may be considered for the role provided they have the necessary skills and experience.
