SUMMARY: Set up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce fabricated parts. Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work pieces, sequence of operation and set up requirements. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers and grinders. Measure, examine and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such micrometers. Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations. Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings and engineering information in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances. Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work. Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts. Program computers and electronic instruments such as numerically controlled machine tools. Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personal in order to exchange technical information. Support metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing, using knowledge of machine functions, metal properties and mathematics. Prepare working sketches for the illustration of product appearance. Set up and operate metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, and cutting equipment. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Three years machinist experience operating milling machines, lathes, surface grinders saws and drill presses. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Demonstrated ability to communicate and understand instructions and safety criteria provided in English. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be able to use shop math skills including basic arithmetic, geometry, algebra and trigonometry to calculate dimensions and tolerances. REASONING ABILITY: Good reasoning skills required. Apply common sense, experience and training to carry out instructions and solutions. COMPUTER SKILLS: Ability to operate ProtoTRAK is a plus. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, walking ability lift 70lbs. Ability to work standing for the majority of the day. Forklift certification or trainability. Ability to listen, hear and comprehend. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Fast paced, multitasking environment. Use of personal protective equipment required. Shop floor, may not be heated, occasional out of doors work.
