Our international focus also includes our existing operations in northern Canada, our iron ore project in Orissa, India, and our exploration programmes which are actively targeting additional Tier 1 resources in north and south Africa, Canada, Brazil and India.

The role
The development of a significantly enhanced reputation and the formation of local partnerships with the State in the countries in which we operate is a top priority in Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s strategic objectives. This position is a key member of the commercial leadership team in the International Operations group.
Reporting to the chief commercial officer within the Iron Ore International Operations team, the Manager International Business Government is responsible for taking the lead in developing, coordinating and implementing a suite of effective government and international business strategies that significantly enhance Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s operational reputation in the countries in which we operate.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Identifying at an early stage emerging Government decisions, regulations and legislation that will affect the business, and ensure business awareness of the potential risks and benefits.
- Provide expert guidance and advice to senior iron ore management on short and long term tactics and strategies in all aspects of external relations – government, officials, commercial, community, institutions, NGO’s, cultural interface, foreign trade and investment bodies.
- Establish and maintain appropriate formal and informal relationships with key external stakeholders, including appropriate frequency and forum / mode of interaction.
- Provide key support and advice to the Chief Commercial Officer and President International Operations on all aspects of external relations and government matters.
- Provide effective internal support and advice on commercial or business matters impacted by government positioning by sharing expertise, advising, ensuring process and assisting with guidance on how to navigate the local bureaucracy.
The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive experience and have significant exposure and understanding of macro-economic policy, government, commercial and business regulatory frameworks. Commensurate social and business cultural understanding coupled with strong business development matters, along with participation in related negotiations and business discussions. Strong communication and leadership ability are essential and form a large part of this role as well as your capability to navigate complex issues and relationships will secure your success in this role.
A graduate and/or post-secondary degree in Political Science or International Business is essential and strong commercial focus and/or MBA background will be highly regarded.
