This is a challenging role for an energetic, creative HR leader, serving as a human resources “player/coach” for a highly complex milling operation as well as oversight/tactical leadership of HR for 11-12 other locations throughout eastern and central United States. A successful candidate will be responsible for partnering with operations leadership Commercial Food Ingredients (CFI) HR leadership in the planning, directing, and coordinating of all human resource management activities to maximize the strategic use of human resources for 12-14 ConAgra Mills domestic Operations locations. Serve as primary HR partner for 2-3 region Operations directors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: integrated talent management (including sourcing, recruiting, new employee assimilation, employee development performance management), recognition rewards (including employee recognition, compensation, and communications), and culture environment (including employee/labor relations engagement, and work environment), as oversight of compliance programs and administration of human resource policies, procedures and practices.

Position will require up to 50% travel and will be located in Alton, Illinois. Alton is a city of 30,000 on the Mississippi River approximately 15 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.

  • Execute HR programs within ConAgra Mills’ assigned locations, including but not limited to sourcing/recruiting/staffing, organizational development, affirmative action planning, performance management, talent development, compensation planning, employee/labor relations and other people-specific issues that arise in the course of day-to-day operations.
  • Partner with Operations leadership to ensure that location salaried positions are adequately staffed trained and that team members are effectively partnering with site leadership to execute the business site’s HR strategies.
  • Partner with Operations and Commercial HR leadership to design and deploy best in class HR policies, procedures and practices.
  • Partner with site leadership to position ConAgra Mills’ as an "Employer of Choice" through the design and development of cutting-edge human resource programs and practices that facilitate preference in the marketplace.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement approved programs and policies to ensure enhancement and acceptance of diversity and proper EEO/AAP legal compliance.
  • Provide current and prospective employees with information about corporate, business and site-specific policies, job duties, working conditions, wages, and opportunities for promotion and employee benefits.
  • Collaborate with corporate staffing on college recruiting, full-time staffing and internship programs.
  • Coach/counsel managers on organizational policy procedural issues specific to both salaried and hourly employees, as well as providing coaching/counseling regarding application of same.
  • Ensure that business location-specific compensation and benefits are competitive, that pay and benefit practices are effective and compliance with legal requirements. Engage Compensation Benefits personnel as needed.
  • Plan and conduct new employee orientation to foster understanding, alignment, engagement, and accountability with respect to organizational objectives.
  • Serve as a link between management and employees by handling questions, interpreting and administering contracts and helping resolve work-related problems.

    Principal Challenges/Complexity

  • Leading HR in an environment with no “dedicated” plant HR personnel. Requires competency in managing by influence and collaborating with operations leadership.
  • Geographic diversity: Regional nature of role requires 40-60% travel, with occasions when percentage of travel may be higher.
  • Developing employee relations' practices and policies and providing highly competitive positioning within the grain milling industry and other related industries.
  • Monitoring and staying abreast of employee relations trends and practices through the analysis of external HR metrics and internal Key Personnel Indexes (KPI) data.
  • Recruiting and retaining candidates in the face of extremely competitive market conditions, identifying and selecting candidates with the skills and philosophy compatible with the needs and culture of ConAgra Foods.
  • Protecting ConAgra Food's interest while complying with government regulations, communicating awareness of the legal implications of all personnel actions.
  • Implementing timely management systems to enhance human resource process effectiveness.

    Position Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in business administration, social sciences or related degree. Desired: masters degree in Business or Organizational Development or Psychology.
  • Minimum of 5 years of solid Human Resource generalist experience, with previous experience leading plant and multi-site HR operations. PHR or SPHR certification preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of ERISA, EEOC and DOL regulations, employment sourcing, communications, human relations, and management skills.
  • Solid understanding of benefits and compensation administration, labor law, and organizational development.
  • Solid labor relations experience, with at least 2 years working with an organized workforce. Participated in negotiating Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Excellent negotiation and persuasive management skills
