Position Summary
The Math Coach is a full-time member of the Leadership Team at Harlem Link, supervised and evaluated by the Principal.
Outcomes and Tasks
Direct Coaching
- Teachers plan and execute for consistently rigorous, high quality instruction
- Provide school-wide and targeted professional development sessions to faculty
- Engage in focused coaching with teaching teams on a cyclical and as-needed basis
- Deliver model lessons
- Collect best practices from classrooms in the school and disseminate throughout the school so that there is a consistent approach to instruction at Harlem Link
- Teachers have the tools, resources and knowledge they need to effectively implement curriculum plans and assessment calendars
- Collaborate with Leadership Team members to ensure the Professional Development calendar is coherent and reflects training and planning in the areas of curriculum and assessment
- Provide targeted coaching in curriculum, assessment, or instruction as determined by the Principal
- Train staff and assist with plans during Summer Institute
- Teachers provide goal-oriented instruction at all levels
- Partner with grade-level teams to set classroom-level goals for performance in and math
- Coach teachers in assessment-oriented instruction and develop tracking systems for students and teachers to measure daily progress
Curriculum and Assessment
- Teachers use formative assessments continuously, effectively and consistently to determine whether students meet Harlem Link standards and how to improve instruction
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to create horizontally aligned grading tools such as rubrics and curriculum-based checklists
- Classroom-based Unit of Study assessments align with curriculum, and occur regularly and consistently
- Teachers routinely analyze and discuss student data and how it impacts instruction
- Teachers plan future instruction based on student data
- Harlem Link Interim Assessments (MAP) are properly administered, scored and used to drive instruction tri-annually
- Coordinate testing windows and Class Roster File with North West Evaluation Association (NWEA)
- Support scheduling and coordinate proctoring of MAP administration
- Together with other members of the Leadership Team and staff, proctor all MAP sessions
- Administer formal assessments as needed, including to Kindergarten Orientation and new students as they enter school after September to determine placement.
- Students, staff and families are ready for state standardized assessments
- Understand and communicate expectations for the PARCC math assessment (2015) and New York State tests that are based on the PARCC (2013-2014)
- Model constructive and positive school attitude to combat test anxiety
- Provide information to parents and teachers about standardized tests
- Families understand student assessment at Harlem Link
- Collaborate with other Leadership Team members to review report cards for consistency, presentation and content
- Curriculum, both as indicate in school Scope and Sequences and as implemented by teachers, is aligned to state performance standards such that Harlem Link students will meet or exceed Accountability Plan goals
- Work with teachers to create appropriate curriculum that addresses testing gaps and test sophistication
- Work with teachers and Leadership Team to ensure vertical alignment in the curriculum
- Participate in kindergarten to fifth grade planning sessions, on a weekly basis
- Revisit curriculum maps tri-annually
- Participate in Board of Trustees Education Committee meetings as appropriate
Leadership
- Leadership Team members contribute to a positive, orderly, unified school culture
- Attend at least four HLPA related events and stay for the entire event
- Attend at least three weekend leadership retreats during the year
- Assist with breakfast, lunch, recess and dismissal on a rotating basis
- Provide school-wide leadership reinforcement of positive behavior from adults and children, including providing crisis intervention in the event the Instructional Leadership Team’s absence
- Leadership Team members foster a climate of intellectual rigor and constant learning
- Attend outside workshops on Common Core implementation and constructivist math best practices
- Model constant learning by being aware of current research and policy debates
Qualifications
Harlem Link seeks an Instructional Coach with the following qualifications:
- Current New York State teacher certification with at least five years’ teaching experience as well as leadership experience
- Familiarity with constructivist math curriculum, instruction and assessment
- Facility with Microsoft Excel and manipulation of spreadsheets and databases
- Familiarity with reliability and validity in assessment and assessment design
- Advanced degree—particularly in coaching or leadership is a plus
- Ability to supervise staff if necessary
- Strong management and organizational skills
Time Frame and Daily Schedule
- The position is a year-round position, with flexible days and hours in July and the first part of August
- The regular Math Coach arrival and dismissal time is set in collaboration with the Principal.
- Arrival time, depending on rotating breakfast duties, will likely vary between 7:30 am and 8:15 am.
- Dismissal time will vary between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm, with additional evening hours required for special projects on a semi-regular basis.
