Midwife Trainer

Background
In 2004, Malawi’s health system was described as ‘dangerously close to collapse’. The Malawian Ministry of Health embarked on a six-year plan to revive it, with funds from the UK Department for International Development. St. John’s College of Nursing is located in Mzuzu City, Mzimba District in Malawi. The college has the mandate of preparing nurses and midwives to work in the Malawi health sector on a three year programme. The graduates provide nursing and midwifery services in various communities, hospitals and nurse training institutions in the country.

The volunteer will be instrumental in the nurse midwifery training and operational plan endorsed by the Ministry of Health. This plan maps out the way forward for the country to begin addressing the huge nursing and midwifery vacancy rates across the country through improving outputs from training institutions like St. John’s College. Inevitably suitably qualified tutors will be key in implementing this plan with the potential to make a huge positive contribution – both in terms of classroom teaching but also through clinical instruction.

What does the role involve:
Participate in and support the roll-out of the faculty mentorship programme
Write proposals to secure resources to enhance the quality of teaching and learning
Initiate activities that would benefit nursing students, tutors and the training institution
Encourage tutors and clinical staff’s participation in appropriate and relevant Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Create an environment that is conducive to learning and conduct CPD sessions for college and clinical staff
Be supportive of learners and be involved in counselling of students
Participate in curriculum reviews, set, administer and mark examinations

Skills, qualifications and experience required:
You can apply for this role if you have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery with three years’ work experience. You should demonstrate an interest in teaching and supervising midwifery students in the classroom, skills lab and clinical setting and have excellent spoken and written English. A qualification in midwifery education is desirable but not essential. The volunteer should be flexible and adaptable, willing and patient and be able to appreciate small changes in a difficult working environment.

And the rest....
At St. Johns College of Nursing English is widely spoken among staff and students with interpreters available when required. While on placement, we’ll ask you to commit to 12-24 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we’ll give you comprehensive financial, personal and professional support. We'll provide you with extensive training including language classes before your placement, and our financial package includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more. When you return to your home country, we'll support you to resettle.
